In this article we’ll be breaking down some of the top guards who saw their stock increase. Each of these players should be getting scholarship interest from Division II and NAIA programs.
DayJuan Anderson, 6’3 SG Ponitz 2023: Anderson doesn’t get the most playing time for All Ohio Red but is becoming more consistent at making an impact with limited playing time. The ability to be ready when you name is called is difficult for a lot of prospects, but Anderson has found a niche as an energy bench scorer for an EYBL program. Anderson is a solid athlete who can attack players off the bounce from the off-guard position. A natural scorer, I think Anderson projects nicely to the next level to play a similar role as a freshman in college, getting buckets and providing a spark off the bench. When you watch Anderson during the high school season, you see him take charge and lead his team in all facets of the game. This allows college coaches to see Anderson shine as the main piece and see how he could potentially fit for their program.
Elias Lewis Elias Lewis 6'2" | SG Olentangy Orange | 2023 State OH , 6’2 SG Olentangy Orange 2023: Lewis and Ryan Nutter Ryan Nutter 6'3" | PG Dublin Jerome | 2023 State OH have formed a solid guard duo for Nova-Village the past couple seasons and the pair have shined on the Under Armour Circuit this spring. Lewis is a shot-maker from the outside with one of the most picture-perfect jumpers you’ll find anywhere. Literally every time Lewis has his feet set, I think the ball is going in. Lewis has also improved his explosiveness in the open court and playing with more toughness. I think Lewis will have a lot of the Division II programs around the Midwest interested in bringing him in for a visit.
Brady Hardewig Brady Hardewig 6'1" | SG Turpin | 2023 State OH , 6’1 SG Turpin 2023: Hardewig is one of the top shooters in the state with a burner on his right arm. Hardewig doesn’t need much time or space to let it fly and if his feet are set, it’s probably going in. Hardewig plays with a toughness that found him stepping up in big time moments including a buzzer-beater in the playoffs to send Elder home. Hardewig is a very limited athlete but could be an absolute stud at the NAIA level with his shooting and feel for the game.
Mikey McCollum Mikey McCollum 6'3" | PG Olentangy Orange | 2023 State OH , 6’2 PG Olentangy Orange 2023: McCollum has seen his stock steadily rise and now seems to be at a point where scholarship programs need to be taking him seriously as an option at the next level. McCollum grew 2-3 inches between his Sophomore and Junior seasons and the difference was notable in his play. McCollum went from an undersized combo guard to a bigger point guard who is now able to see over the defense and make advanced reads in the half-court. McCollum got noticed originally with his outside shooting ability and that skill is still apparent when you watch him play. McCollum is one of my favorite guards to watch in Ohio’s 2023 class as college coaches should be checking him out for Ohio United and Olentangy Orange this summer.
