It will be hotly contested as Newark West Side, Arts, East Orange, Payne Tech and Newark Tech all return big pieces of the puzzle. Today we begin featuring some SEC Liberty players to watch this summer and into next season.
Devin Artis Devin Artis 5'10" | PG Pocono Mt. West | 2024 State PA | 6’0” | G | Newark West Side 2024
The crafty guard played a role as a backcourt facilitator for West Side has they made a deep run into the playoffs. A good passer who also can get into the paint off the dribble and finish. Hits the glass well for a young guard. With two seasons to go, his skillset should expand as his leadership role also expands. Provided a spark with 10 in the playoff win against American History. Also had good games vs Orange(17,12) and Millburn(14). Plays his AAU with PPA Elite.
Brandon Rodriguez Brandon Rodriguez 6'0" | CG West Side | 2023 State NJ | 5’11” | G | Newark West Side 2023
Creative scorer who is a good ballhandler and uses those skills to finish around the rim. He’s also a good shooter from deep and completes his all around game by hitting the boards. He had a breakout year as a junior. Scored 29 vs Verona, 28 vs Millburn. Played well in the state tournament as well, including 19 in the sectional final loss to Glen Ridge. Plays AAU with PPA Elite and will likely draw interest from college coaches in the coming year.
Anthony Akande Anthony Akande 6'4" | SG Arts | 2024 State NJ | 6’3” | F | Newark Arts 2024
Good ballhandler who attacks the rim strong and an also shoot from outside. Nice range from beyond the arc and can also finish in traffic. He’s part of an Arts core that will be very tough the next few years if they all stay together. He had 21&11 vs Orange as well as 13&11 vs Bayonne. Plays for the Jersey Force AAU. If Akande grows another inch or two, scholarship programs could come around in numbers.
Savod Godwin Savod Godwin 6'5" | SF Arts | 2024 State NJ | 6’5” | F | Newark Arts 2024
An athletic big who does his biggest work in the post but also runs the floor well for a guy his size. He’s still growing and filling out, which is impressive considering he’s already got a very mature frame that gives him a big advantage at the high school level. Tough defender who cleans up on the glass at both ends. Had 17&12 vs East Orange and 13&13 vs Montclair. He’ll be a scholarship level player.
