The Oklahoma State Tournament has come to an end and we saw plenty of good basketball in the Oklahoma City area. I was posted up at the Solid Rock facility, watching the 17U division and we had some competitive basketball throughout the weekend. One part that stood out about the 17U division was seeing several unsigned 2022 prospects not only look good once again but in some cases, flat out dominate their opponent. In this post, we take a look at some of the best unsigned seniors that we saw throughout the weekend. Stay tuned to Prep Hoops Oklahoma for more coverage of the two-day event in the OKC area.
Daquaylyn Mitchell
One of several 2022 prospects that made a big impact while playing for the OKC Rise squad was Daquaylin Mitchell. OKC Rise was a team completely made up of 2022 prospects that were still looking for their next opportunity. Mitchell had a strong showing throughout the tournament. Mitchell has good size and played like a guard throughout the tournament and was a real problem for opposing guards to handle. Mitchell’s defense definitely made him jump out during games on Saturday as he aggressive play and size advantage led to many turnovers and easy buckets. Mitchell’s motor was also impressive to witness as he has a gear that not many others have. That can also lead to out of control plays but you also can’t teach the athleticism and speed that Mitchell plays with.
Didier Maleng Didier Maleng 6'10" | C Lawton Christian | 2022 OK
2022 big man Didier Maleng Didier Maleng 6'10" | C Lawton Christian | 2022 OK has bounced around over the last few years but every time we’ve seen him at a Prep Hoops event, we’re reminded why he was considered arguably the best big man in the state’s 2022 class. Playing with the OKC Rise team, Maleng showed why he was considered just that as he absolutely dominated the paint in a big way. Teams just didn’t have an answer for the size and skill that Maleng plays the game with as he is a force on offense but isn’t just a brute. He has nice touch around the basket and then on defense, he’s outstanding. We lost count of how many shots Maleng would turn away and he controlled the boards as well. Maleng’s high school journey was definitely not a normal one but whoever gives him a shot at the next level won’t be sorry.
Elijah Caul
One of the top shooters in the tournament had to be Elijah Caul out of Colorado, playing with the 5280 Athletics squad. Caul was red hot from beyond the arc and he certainly wasn’t afraid of shooting the rock. In one game on Saturday, Caul would knock down seven three-pointers. We haven’t gone through every single score sheet from the tournament but I think it’s safe to say that his seven makes is going to be at or at the very least near the top. What’s impressive was during that same game, he netted six of the treys in the first half alone. When I got a chance to watch Caul for an entire game, he definitely fit the description of a microwave shooter. Once Caul made one shot, it was on after that. Caul was going to shoot until he missed and the misses happened more rarely than the makes.
Jawan Mukes Jawan Mukes 5'8" | PG OKC Storm | 2022 OK
We’ve seen point guard Jawan Mukes Jawan Mukes 5'8" | PG OKC Storm | 2022 OK a couple of times during circuit tournaments and every time we see him, we are more impressed. He has to be considered one of the better point guards in the state’s 2022 class and that was once again on display throughout this weekend’s tournament. For starters, Mukes absolutely controls the point guard position and his team goes as he goes as he has full control. He gets his teammates involved but isn’t afraid to pull up from anywhere and the shot is pure. Mukes, despite being undersized, has no problems driving into the paint and finishing at the basket. Then you turn around and look at what he does on the defensive side of the floor and there’s more things to like about him. I’ve watched Mukes in multiple tournaments now and I’ve bought in.
