From the start, Emmett Lawton Emmett Lawton 6'2" | SG Notre Dame Academy | 2023 State WI (Notre Dame was making it rain. Showed a lot of confidence early in their first game against Wisconsin Crusaders. But it was the Crusaders who got going first. Caleb Glaser Caleb Glaser 6'6" | SF Appleton East | 2023 State WI (Appleton East) got going with a nice slam running down the paint. The 6’7″ forward was a force down low at the beginning with 15 points mostly in the paint. He also forced some tough shots on defense and had a few blocks. Lawton made four 3-pointers in the first half but was trailing 31-42. This was when he took over the game. Lawton hit five more triples in the second half as Team 1848 stormed back to take a massive lead late. Lawton also passed well with four second-half assists I noticed. He finished the game with 29 points and missed only one long-ball I saw.
Jaquan Johnson Jaquan Johnson 5'10" | PG Pius XI | 2024 State WI Leads 16U Playground Past Blizzard:
Jaquan Johnson Jaquan Johnson 5'10" | PG Pius XI | 2024 State WI (Pius XI) surely played like one of the best guards in Wisconsin this evening. He’s a very crafty ball-handler who can create some great scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. It wasn’t until late in the first half where Playground got hot. Before that, Ty Fernholtz (Stoughton) showed some nice vision with two assists to big man Will Hornseth Will Hornseth 6'8" | PF De Pere | 2024 State #208 Nation WI . Both Fernholtz and Hornseth impressed with finishes through traffic. Fernholtz also hit two 3-pointers early on. Keaton Frisch Keaton Frisch 6'7" | SF Waunakee | 2024 State WI (Waunakee) led a late-half comeback with two 3-pointers and impressive off-ball movement. It was in the second half where Johnson exploded. Coast-to-coast finish through contact extended the lead to 6. The 6’0″ guard is an excellent slashing playmaker as he finished with 20 points and 16 in the second half. Playground won 62-61.
Illinois Elite 17U Comeback Falls Short Against Crusaders:
The Crusaders bounced back nicely in their second game against Illinois Elite. Wing Levi Birkholz Levi Birkholz 5'2" | SG Lakeside Luthersn | 2023 State #290 Nation WI (Lakeside Lutheran) really came alive in this game. He showed off his athleticism by throwing down a powerful fast-break dunk. He almost had an insane poster late in the game too. He’d eventually finish with 19 points as Wisconsin Crusaders won 86-61. But the most impressive player overall was Illinois Elite’s James Prescott (Hillcrest Prep). Prescott had 14 first half points. Hit the deep ball well and scored inside. The 5’11″ guard had some impressive ball-handling too. I loved when he took a three, and immediately crashed the glass for an offensive rebound. His best play came in the second half when he broke a defenders ankles and found an open teammate right under the basket. Prescott finished with 30 points despite the loss.
16U Wisconsin Playground and Playmakers Play Classic
Cole Hanson (Wauwatosa West) knocked down a few shots to start the game. Has a really smooth stroke and would really put it on later. For the Playmakers, Cody Schmitz Cody Schmitz 6'4" | SG Gale Ettrick-Trempeleau | 2024 State WI had 14 points early into the 2nd half with some great passes to go along with it. He won lots for 1v1 battles in the paint as both teams exchanged Muti-possession leads throughout the game. Stevie Clark Stevie Clark 6'6" | SF Oshkosh North | 2024 State #322 Nation WI Jr really impressed me for Wisconsin Playground. The 2024 combo-guard had a nice three and then got two offensive rebonds on the next possession, leading to an assist. But late in the game, he absolutely posterized an opponent. Something nobody thought he had up his sleeve. Cole Hanson hit his sixth three-pointer thatch happened to be the game winner in the final 30 seconds. On the other end, Reek Raek came through with a crucial block on defense to secure the win. Jaquan Johnson Jaquan Johnson 5'10" | PG Pius XI | 2024 State WI and Miles Graham also had a 2nd half’s.
