With all the talented players in the midwest grind session tournament, these are the top 5 guards that stood out to us.
Kaeson Fisher-Brown Kaeson Fisher-Brown 6'2" | CG Derby | 2023 KS (Oz Elite 2023 6’2″) – This name is not a surprise to many, Kaeson has shown he is one of the best guards no matter the gym he walks into. What you love about him is his 6’2″ frame, he has a strong body and uses it to his advantage by physically abusing his opponents all game long. Fisher-Brown has a really good stroke from mid-range or 3 and has shown that on a consistent basis. From his smooth strokes to his strong drives, to go along with that, Kaeson has an elite handle and is extremely shifty with the ball making it very tough to keep in front of. What makes Kaeson an elite guard is that he defends at a high level!
Jasiah Shields Jasiah Shields 6'0" | PG Derby | 2023 KS (Oz Elite 2023 6’1″) – Jasiah is very entertaining to watch. His speed and quickness are at another level than anyone else you may have seen and he knows that. Off the catch or off the rebound he is looking to push it in transition right away and meet you at the rim. He has an elite handle to him but often doesn’t need to use it because of his ability to blow right by you and use his acrobatic finish at the rim to score over multiple defenders.
Cooper Chadwick (Wichita padres 2023 6’) – Cooper is every coach’s dream in a guard. When you talk about what you want in a dream guard you talk about all the attributes one should have but 1 thing you don’t have to add that Chadwick is going to bring is his ability to be the coach on the floor. Cooper plays at his own pace and never gets sped up despite the different defenses he and his team might see night in and night out. What’s most impressive to me is his ability to execute plays that his coach calls. What may seem easy, cooper showed up this weekend that he can make the tough passes and make sure his team is put in the best situation possible to win the game.
Keaton Selfridge (Tulsa Impact 2025 5’9″) – Keaton was one of the best guards this weekend that stood out and one that does not look his age. At just 5’9″ Selfridge is a strong guard that muscles his way through the defense for the shot that he wants not the one the defense gives him. He was one of the best rebounding guards the tournament had to show with his leaping ability and determination to get the ball. When teams finally collapsed the paint he showed them he could shoot the 3 ball if you left him open, making him tough to guard. With the passion and heart Keaton plays with, he has the ability to fire his team up and spark a run for this tulsa team.
Eli Benning (Wichita Padres 2025 6’) – One of the shiftiest guards the midwest grind had to offer, Eli is a big problem when he is on the court because of his ability to get downhill and make plays happen for himself or his teammates. Benning can get by anyone’s first defender and has a high IQ to score and kick on the 2nd defender. Eli is a huge reason for the game-winning shot against the TTG Elite in the final game on Sunday being that he has the assist and Corbin has the game-winning 3.
