It could be the way he fits with the roster of the team, it could be the players development, or many other reasons. Here is a preview for the upcoming high school season in Massachusetts, on players who I think could take a big step, and have a breakout season.
Tyler Randall, Newton North, Position G, Class 2023
I think Tyler could be a player who will have a big season next year. Tyler was on the talented division 1 state runner up Newton North team. Newton North had a lot of depth on the team, so at times Tyler might have been overlooked. The Newton North team really bought in to playing for the team over themselves, so everyone was sharing the ball, and the stats were balanced. Tyler is an athletic player, who has a very high vertical jump. He is a sharp shooter, with a good shooting motion, and a quick release. He can hit shots with consistency, and had a number of games last season where he made multiple three pointers. Defense has always been a staple of Newton North basketball, and Tyler is a versatile defender, who can guard multiple positions. Watch out for Tyler this coming season.
Matthew Randall, Newton North, Position G, Class 2023
The other duo of the backcourt Randall twins for Newton North is Matthew. Mathew is an athletic player, and can jump high, and even play above the rim. I think Matthew will have a bigger role for the team this upcoming season. Matthew moves well without the ball, and is also a constant shot maker. Mathew has a good combination of skills and athleticism. Mathew is also having a strong season on the Volleyball team for Newton North. Lots of the volleyball athleticism can translate well over to the basketball court.
Derin Ongur, Lexington, Position CG, Class 2024
Lots of attention in the Lexington backcourt goes to CJ Cox, and (rightfully so), but Derin should be a player on your radar for this coming season. Derin is playing AAU for this Middlesex Magic this spring, and he has been lighting it up. He had 25 points with 7 threes, and 6 assists in one game. Derin is a sharp shooter, and also a good passer. Look for a bigger role for Derin this high school season.
Josiah Griffin, Springfield Central, Position F, HT 6’4, Class 2023
Josiah is another player on the springfield central basketball team, that is also a standout on the football team. The Springfield Central basketball team made the division 1 final 4 last season. Josiah is a big built. He is listed at 6’4, 235. He moves well for his size. Josiah took a big jump last year on the team, and should continue that this coming season. He scored a lot more, also played a lot more minutes. Josiah plays forward, and scores most of his points from the paint, and midrange. The Springfield central team, has a lot of strong and athletic players.
