Standing out on defense will always draw the attention of coaches and evaluators. Especially as core tenants of defense are self motivation and pride. Those two players traits not only help players excel in high school but also go on to have successful collegiate careers.
Let’s take a look at a group of tough minded guards and upside wings that made game-changing plays on defense last weekend.
Tayvien Gasu, 6’0 Guard, Valor/Union Black 2025
On the smaller size, Gasu plays bigger due to his combination of length, athleticism and big time motor. He’s seemingly a non stop whirlwind of activity on defense. He was very active in creating deflections that led to steals for himself or even the occasional blocked shot. Gasu was largely a successful off the ball gambler in creating havoc, but also had some good moments of sitting down and guarding as well.
Xaiver Babbit, 6’4 Wing, Mississippi Wildcats 2025
An effortless looking athlete, Babbit looked the part when he skied for rebounds and blocked shots. Beyond his feel for the game as a defender, it’s overall athletic ability that truly made him standout. When leaping he doesn’t need a run way to take off, which is what helps block shots like a bigger player. He was one of the top athletes in attendance and needs longterm monitoring.
Mikah Hunt, 6’2 Guard, Sparks Basketball 2025
Strong. Quick, Long wingspan. Prideful. All are key ingredients in becoming a good perimeter defender and all describe Hunt. On Sunday morning he showed those traits with the way he used his physicality to make the opposition uncomfortable when he gave them no space to drive while also little room when they pulled up to shoot. Players that are self motivated with a good motor are rarer now, and it is refreshingly to see a player like Hunt that was bought in and impacting the game defensively. Especially when he sat down and covered players with good fundamentals and using his feet and strength to defend instead of gambling.
Kadin Wright, 6’3 Wing, Victory Academy 2025
An incredibly raw athlete, Wright is very intriguing from upside and defensive standpoints. He’s nimble for his size with good leaping ability which allowed him to be active in passing lanes, block and alter shots. There’s a lot of upside to his game which an increase of his motor and feel for the game could turn his potential into big time defensive production.
Conner Cubage, 6’1 Guard, DYG Hoops 2025
Another player who took pride on defense and brought tremendous energy to his team with Cubage. His intensity stood out with how he defended his man, and worked off the ball to try to create turnovers, which at one point led to a good steal and score. He’s a stronger guard for a 15U player, and has a bit of an unorthadox style that leads to some good moments of unpredictability.
