Zion McCoy Zion McCoy 6'1" | SG Northside | 2023 State LA (Xtreme Hoops ’23 | 6’2″ | Northside)
The team went 3-1 over the weekend and McCoy’s play was a big part of the reason. In their comeback win over 3P Elite. McCoy hit a big three to pull the team within one in regulation. Then, in the extra session, McCoy hit a big three to tie the game and got an inbounds steal and scored an old-fashioned three to seal the comeback. McCoy proved that he can score at all three levels and is not afraid of big moments. He has a clutch gene that a lot of preps do not have.
Letavian Crockett Letavian Crockett 6'1" | CG St Amant | 2023 State LA (Louisiana Fire ’23 | 6’1″ | St. Amant)
Louisiana Fire went 4-0 and played an attacking style the entire weekend. Letavian Crockett Letavian Crockett 6'1" | CG St Amant | 2023 State LA was one of the 2023 players on the team that led the charge. He was a one man fast break at times the way he constantly put pressure on the defense. He has a second gear with the ball that allows him to get to the cup in a hurry. Crockett also managed to show a more consistent stroke from three which made him a hard cover during the weekend.
Chris Shiflett Jr Chris Shiflett Jr 5'9" | PG Evangel Christian Academy | 2025 State LA (O.W.E.-RW3 ’25 | 5’8″ | Evangel)
Speaking of a tough cover, CJ Shiftlett was that guy during play against the other 15U/2025 teams. He proved that he can be a three level scorer and run the team which is a deadly combination. He nailed 4-plus from behind the arc in a tight loss to Team Texas Takeover. His coast-to-coast, game winner against the DC Kings Denton ’25 team proved that he is as good at getting to the rim as he is behind the arc. Shiftlett showed he is primed and ready for competition this summer.
Draven Smith Draven Smith 6'5" | SF French Settlement | 2023 State LA (Louisiana Fire ’23 | 6’5″ | French Settlement)
Smith may be undersized as far as bigs go but he was a handful for every team Louisiana Fire played this weekend. He is a strong post player who can rebound the offensive and defensive boards very well. Smith has soft hands and catches passes in traffic well. He can finish with either hand and is very good at tracking the ball to create extra possessions. Louisiana was 4-0 for a reason this weekend. The inside presence of Smith was a big part of it.
Trey’Dez Green Trey’Dez Green 6'8" | PF Zachary | 2024 State #54 Nation LA (LA Broncos ’24 | 6’8″ | East Feliciana)
Green was easily the most dominant big man playing this weekend and that pretty much goes for all three ages. His game is predicated on his athleticism and he showed it in various ways. On defense, he stayed engaged with his man until players went for their shot. Green used his timing to block shots and keep them in bounds. His speed allowed him to beat every big down the floor and establish great post position or complete bucks in transition. Green is one of the top players in the 2024 class and easily displayed it in Houston.
Canon Edgecombe Canon Edgecombe 6'1" | CG St. Michael | 2023 State LA (Showtime Elite ’23 | 6’1″ | St. Michael)
Canon proved to the teams in Houston and other players in Louisiana that he cannot be left open. He sets his feet faster than anyone I have seen in a long time and he makes them from 27 feet in with great consistency. Against Shine Elite U17, it was that consistency along with his movement and accuracy that allowed him to make six triples. In the game against TJ Ford ’23, it was catching his defender napping allowing him to get open shots and his clutch free throws to close the game. Canon made his case for best shooter in the Boot this weekend.
Shad Levy Shad Levy 6'3" | CG Dunham | 2023 State LA (Showtime Elite ’23 | 6’3″ | Dunham)
Levy may have been the best player from Louisiana the entire weekend in Houston. He played both ends of the floor with a high intensity and showed that he is a player who can get it done from behind the arc and at the rim. Levy displayed his ability of getting to the rim and using his vertical to complete plays. He did not shy away from contact either while attacking the rim either and made teams pay by converting at the charity strip. Levy is a definite player to watch as the grassroots season continues.
Others who had a good showing in Houston:
Jeremiah Lewis Jeremiah Lewis 6'3" | SG Ponchatoula | 2024 State LA (HP Ballers)
Taj Jackson Taj Jackson 6'2" | CG Ponchatoula | 2024 State LA (HP Ballers)
