The son of Kennedy head coach Jon McKowen, Trey is a 5-10 point guard with an incredibly high basketball IQ. He’s an excellent ball-handler and decision-maker who values possessions and puts his teammates in positions to score. He’s a confident three-level scorer who can get to his spot whenever he wants and has the physicality to absorb contact and finish through it around the rim. He moves his feet well defensively and is a strong on-ball defender who really makes the opposing guard work hard to initiate the offense.
SG Mason Watkins Mason Watkins 6'2" | PG West Burlington | 2025 State IA (West Burlington)
Watkins is small (listed at 5-11 currently, probably more like 5-9), but makes up for his lack of size with his quickness and change of pace. He has a great first step that he uses to burst by defenders and get to the rim where he’s a creative finisher who displays excellent body control. He has a quick release on his jumper off the catch and moves well without the ball in his hands.
PF Davis Kern Davis Kern 6'8" | PF Linn-Mar | 2025 State #244 Nation IA (Linn-Mar)
Kern was one of the most impressive players in the gym on Saturday, regardless of class. He’s starting to fill out his 6-8 frame, looking noticeably bigger in his shoulders, which will help him finish in the paint more efficiently. He’s a mobile, switchable defender with length who can also protect the rim at a high level, and he has a smooth stroke from behind the arc. A modern big man who protects the rim and stretches the floor, Kern will be very high up when we put together the initial 2025 rankings early next month.
PF Landon Deiters Landon Deiters 6'8" | PF Kennedy | 2025 State IA (Kennedy)
A 6-7 big man with a big, physical frame, Deiters is excellent on the glass on both ends of the floor, using his big frame and soft hands to dominate in that area of the game. He did a good job running the floor and burying his man early on in possessions, establishing strong position and sealing his defender for easy finishes.
SF Jalen Kirkpatrick (Grundy Center)
Kirkpatrick was a new name for me, and he was really impressive in Martin Brothers win over All-Iowa Attack East Red. A 6-6 wing with good length, he’s a solid team defender who rotates well which led to a number of forced turnovers. He rebounds the ball well on both ends of the floor and is a good enough ball-handler to pull down a defensive board and lead the break. He’s active on both ends of the floor and has the size, length, and athleticism combination that will make him a name to keep a close eye on over the next three years as he continues to round out the rest of his game.
SF Payson Nietert (Linn-Mar)
Another impressive new name, Nietert is a 6-4 wing with some length who is active on both ends of the floor. He showed the ability to create his own shot from the wing, putting the ball on the floor with a few hard dribbles and elevating into his mid-range jumper, which is smooth. He’s a very solid role player for this group who can do a little bit of everything.
