The Hustle Region Circuit consists of AAU Programs from California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, and New Mexico. The circuit features 10 stops including the Hustle Region Final in Irvine July 15th – 17th. Stop 7 brings us to the Pacific Northwest and Portland Oregon, where almost 30 teams are competing. There were several players that were terrific filling the lanes and finishing plays. In this article, we take a look at the top wings from the event.
Paul Hobson 6’2 SG Idaho Premiere 2024 – Hobson has a lot of skills, but he really impressed me with his toughness. He’s a player that showed that he’s unafraid to stick his nose in and compete for tough rebounds and loose balls. Regarding his skills, he shot the ball well both in catch and shoot and off the bounce. I liked the way he used P&R action, and he did a good job overall of keeping the defense off-balance with his threat to shoot or drive.
Jamar Mitchell Jamar Mitchell 6'6" | SF Fort Collins | 2023 State CO 6’4 SF NOCO 2023 (#68PHCO 2023) – I think I’m going to start naming Mitchell the quiet assassin. He has a knack for producing without much flash. He won’t knock down a ton of threes, but he kills you from mid-range. He’s not a crazy athlete, but he comes down with more than his share of rebounds. Overall this weekend, he was solid and efficient while helping NOCO pick up a couple of wins.
Kayin Turner Kayin Turner 6'5" | SF Sunset | 2024 State OR 6’4 SG Progress Elite 2024 (featured image) (#17PHOR 2024) – Turner was one of the top players at the event this weekend. The wing was dominant in the full game I saw, grabbing double-digit boards, slashing to the cup, and creating for teammates. He has the type of size and skill that make you think you’re looking at a D1 wing, and if continues to produce the way he did this weekend, you’re probably correct.
Sidney Jones Sidney Jones 6'6" | PF Aloha | 2022 State OR 6’5 SF Progress Elite 2022 (#82PHOR 2022) – Jones would have been on my all Swiss Army Knife team if I had one. The versatile forward was terrific using his size to see over defenders to find teammates. His size also allowed him to defend almost every position on the floor. He scored when the ball found him but didn’t force anything. He and Turner formed perhaps the best 1-2 punch of the event.
Malik Brown Malik Brown 6'0" | PG Tigard | 2023 State OR 6’0 SG Team Fly 2023 (#8PHOR 2023) – Brown may be a bit undersized to play the wing, but he made up for his lack of size with energy and athleticism. He was able to get his in transition. Brown was simply too fast for most players when he didn’t have the ball in his hands, and to explosive when he did. He scored a ton of layups simply by catching and finishing.
Tai Run Williams 6’4 SF No Fear Elite 2023 – I haven’t seen many players play with a higher motor than TRW this weekend. The long athletic wing competed for everything grabbing in traffic rebounds while defending every perimeter position. He was dominant at the head of No Fear’s press, getting tips and causing havoc. Unofficially he led the tournament in dunks, spending a lot of time on the rim this weekend.
Jasier Smith 6’4 SF Vallejo Generals 2024 – Smith was the top scorer for the Generals. He was able to get out and finish in transition, and showed some nice 1 v 1 moves. His most impressive trait may have been his defense, as he used his length and quickness to cause several turnovers on the day.
