Continue ReadingI continue my coverage of the Grit Memorial with a look at 6 of the best SG’s from the weekend. While the obvious trait I like with SGs is their shooting ability, I felt this group had a nice combination of shooters and slashers, as well as guys that just play basketball the right way. Who are some of these guys? Take a look below.
Braydn Szczepaniak Braydn Szczepaniak 6'4" | SF Saint Ignatius | 2023 State OH 6’4 OBC (St. Ignatius)
Szczepaniak played his tail off for OBC and made the right plays at the right times for the club in their Saturday opener. Comes in with a nice physical frame and a highly competitive mentality. Played with a lot of energy and with a high motor. Found the rim and hustled on both ends. Szczepaniak isn’t as athletic as some of the other names on this list, but he plays hard and does the simple things to win.
Stone Edwards Stone Edwards 6'6" | SF Toledo Start | 2023 State OH 6’3 CCB (Toledo Start)
Edwards didn’t disappoint in the game I watched as it served as my first evaluation of the lefty. Edwards has odd shooting mechanics, but straight buries shots from the perimeter and did it consistently. Patient with the ball in his hands and made smart basketball plays if he wasn’t shooting the ball himself. Edwards does have a scrawnier build but has shown he can compete in the trenches and on the glass.
Josh Henline Josh Henline 6'2" | SG Spencerville | 2023 State OH 6’2 CLP Elite (Spencerville)
Henline impressed me for a solid CLP Elite team in Saturday’s action. Coming from Spencerville, Henline doesn’t play against extremely athletic teams back at home. But in AAU he was able to demonstrate he can hang with the bigger and more athletic guards. Playing against CCB, Henline showed clean finishing at the rim and straight line attacking to get by on-ball defenders. Separated himself and had a nasty spin move around the rim to finesse finishing.
Sean Mckitrick Sean Mckitrick 6'2" | SG Archbishop Carroll | 2023 State OH 6’3 Dayton Elite (Carroll)
McKitrick put on a shooting clinic in Columbus helping lead his Dayton Elite team against INB Elite Saturday morning. McKitrick already is known for his deadly catch-and-shoot perimeter shooting in the GCL and with Dayton Elite. Has shown improvement making shots off the dribble as well as his overall defensive game has continued to improve. While McKitrick can bury 3’s, my one concern continues to be his shot selection as he tends to take shots early in possessions. Even with this in mind, he still is an elite shooter.
Myles Colvin 6’5 INB Elite (Heritage Christian)
Colvin undoubtedly was the best prospect in the building as he brings the most hype being a Purdue commit. Colvin has a filled frame and excellent shot creation moments. Gets to the free throw line with his acceleration and drive to get to the rim. Made a few pull-up jumpers in the midrange when the driving lanes were cutoff. While Colvin has a great arsenal on the offensive end, I felt his defense was slightly slacking as he didn’t utilize his size the best when guarding on the perimeter and being in help side position. Nonetheless, he’s an excellent guard and should continuing turning heads in July.
Phaeton Hill 6’3 Western PA Pride (Steubenville)
Hill played well in two games I watched Sunday and was probably my favorite new name from the event. Hill brought some of the better defensive play from the SG slot from the event. I liked how he was a glue guy for whoever he was guarding and had a clear size advantage. Demonstrated good combo scoring as both a slashing guard and a spot up shooting threat. Hill’s versatility and athleticism makes me believe he could have a big senior year in the OVAC with Steubenville.
