Another week of high level Prep Hoops in the metroplex. Dallas the home of many high level/elite prospects is also home of one of America’s greatest teams. The Dallas Mavericks. While preparing for their Western Conference Final against the Goldenstate Warriors. The Dallas Mavericks decided to put together a Classic filled with high level talent. Many prospects are unknown, many will made cases to be known. This Part I of many outstanding performers. I’m going to start with the Varsity 9-12 Division!
Xavier Peyton |2024 | G | Mid-Cities Spartans |
Peyton played great all weekend. He showed off his ability to be a knock down shooter. He also showed off an ability to create to get his shot off as well as create for others. Peyton has motor that was relentless. On countless occasions I watched him recover 50-50 balls that led to scoring opportunities for the Spartans. Peyton’s hard work proved to be a thing of beauty for the Spartans in receiving runner up honors in the Dallas Mavericks Jr. NBA Classic.
Jaden Juarez |2023 | G | BBSS NATIONAL 17U |
Juarez played great on both ends of the flow. On offense he scored on all three levels with his smooth shooting. The pace that Juarez plays with us a thing of beauty. He can’t be sped up or slowed down, he gets to his spots and begins to create. Offensively Juarez was the most unstoppable player in the Dallas Mavericks Jr. NBA Classic finishing almost every game with at least 30 points. He not only did it on the offensive end, he played elite defense on the defensive end. Guarding 94 by 50 at his coaches orders, getting into the passing lanes when he was off the ball and rebounding to finish the play. Juarez was determined to help the SharpShooters pull out the victory.
Harvey Tolley | 2024| C | Starz |
Tolley was a load on the low block dominate with his size and ability to draw fouls. Tolley made a living at the charity stripe with his ability to be able to use his size to create contact. Tolley rebounded well and converted on many And 1 opportunities that kept his team in most games. His presence on the floor impressed me along with his basketball IQ. At the high post his passing about my was on full display. Hitting his teammates in stride, converting back door plays or placing the ball only where his teammates can get it. He reminded the Dallas Maverick Jr. NBA Classic and there opponents that the big man is NOT out of style. Throw him the ball and let him dominate.
Javan Perez | 2024 | G | BBSS 16U GOLD |
Perez started the Dallas Mavericks Jr. NBA Classic with his best game of the weekend. Finishing with 18 points Perez played well for the Sharpshooters. The ball was moving for them and he Perez was capitalizing. Perez got to the basket at will on multiple drives to the basket using his hesitation dribble to freeze his defender and finish through traffic. He also finished over the top with multiple floaters en route to his team high 18 points. Perez continued his three level assault knocking down four three pointers in the contest. Perez played well for the Sharpshooters on the defensive end as well, guarding his opponents best guard at times.
Isaiah Bailey |2024 | F | Mid-Cities Spartans |
Bailey the other half of the Mid-Cities Spartans duo was active every game. His relentless ability to keep things going for the Mid Cities Spartans help them to Runner-Up status. No play was dead with Bailey on the floor. Every loose ball, every rebound, virtually every 50-50 ball Bailey had his hands on. His energy and effort made him an X-factor in every game. His value to the Spartans propelled them many more ways than one. The ability to create second chances that led to scoring opportunities for the Spartans is why Bailey makes the list. Being relentless is a skill and I’m sure Bailey will get better. He’s doing what he does best well right now.
Carson Taylor

|2023 | G | BBSS NATIONAL 17U |
Taylor is long, wirey, athletic and explosive. He showed all of that off in the open court as well as in the half court for the eventual champion of the Dallas Mavericks Jr. NBA Classic Varsity Division. Every time I looked over Taylor was applying pressure to the defense. Whether it was in the open court pushing the pace for a fast break lay-up, or him sprinting to his spot to knock down yet another three pointer. Taylor at 6’5-6’6 on the wing is a big problem for his opponents. His ability to shoot the ball from deep keeps his opponents off balance which allows him to use his deceptive handle to get to the basket and finish over defenders. Taylor though long and wirey is very physical, and when he attacked the basket he was either finishing at the rim with power or getting fouled and sent to the charity stripe.
