Having a good weekend may help prospective student athletes catch the eye of an interested coach. Along with the Top Achievers 2022 Unsigned squad, there were other individuals of the 2022 class who strung good performances together. We will take a look at some of them in this Prep Hoop exclusive from the Mayhem in the Plex.
Josh Holly (6’3″ | Mamba Wolfpack ’23 | Hillcrest Academy)
Holly is a freakish athlete who can get up and down the floor like a forward and finish like one as well. He has the size of a big guard but I did not really see him handle it much. What he has is a first and second jump that allowed him to garner rebound after rebound during game play. A player with the athleticism Holly possesses is hard to defend and many teams had trouble with him in transition and in the paint this weekend.
D’Anthony Kimble (6’4″ | WBBP Rush ’23 | Homer)
Kimble was one of the more polished players seen all weekend. His ability to score from the free throw line in was part old school hoops and part playing to his strengths. Kimble took advantage of players his size or taller by using his handle to get within three feet of the goal and finish. With smaller defenders, he took advantage of his height. He is a big guard that can get to his spots easily. His jumper was about the only thing off this weekend. However, Kimble was very tough to defend all weekend.
Deshawn Russell (5’11″ | Tarrant Elite | Crowley)
Russell showed how much a polished point guard can make a difference when one is on the floor. He was a player who played with poise when it came to handling the Tarrant Elite offense. His handle was impressive in that he got to his spots or created situations for others to be successful. Russell scored against anyone who was put in front of him. One game he began with a long range three and during another he drove to the rim by his defender on the first couple of possessions. He showed range about four feet behind the arc and the wherewithal to get to the rim at will while playing with confidence. His point guard skills were highly impressive during this weekend’s play.
Myles Vasquez (6’1″ | 3P Elite | Lake Ridge)
Vasquez played with or without the ball in his hands this weekend and was good in each capacity. He is a guard who is good at pushing pace and finding players during drive and kick and drive and drop off situations. When the ball was not in his hands, Vasquez displayed an ability to prep quickly and get his shot off. On defense, he showed that he can defend all types of guards. Vasquez can defend one-on-one, chase over screens, and provide help. He is a player who displayed his versatility over game play on Saturday and Sunday.
Zavion Wells Zavion Wells 6'3" | SG North Forney | 2022 TX (6’4″ | Legacy Basketball ’23 | North Forney)
Wells may have needed a weekend like this to show the totality of his game. He is a player who can defend several positions while being a threat on all levels offensively. During one game this weekend, Wells displayed his versatility to the hilt. He scored on four consecutive possessions in four different ways. Wells made a three, had a rebound putback, and drove to the rim twice past two different defenders. He performed on the offensive end while defending the 6’8″ post on one possession and smaller guards on others. Wells has a lot of potential and displayed it this weekend.
The class of 2022 still has time to land in on the next level at a college or junior college that will give them the opportunity. May has just begun and signings will continue through the end of July. These five players have something to offer a program on the next level. If they continue to play as they did this weekend, they will find a home before the 22-23 school year begins.
