I was able to attend the event on Saturday April, 16 and I focused on the California teams. Here’s a quick look at some additional standouts I saw.
1. Shane Frazier – Windward 2025
This was my second time watching Frazier play in the past month and what has stood out to me is is ball-handling ability for a forward and being able to shoot off the dribble. He’s an unselfish player who does a good job swinging the ball in the halfcourt and keeping it moving. He has good length and the tools to be an effective defensive player. He’s able to use his length and his athleticism to sneak in for rebounds.
2. Da’Vian Brooks – Knight 2025
Brooks can handle the ball well and in the game I saw, he played a ball-handling role but can also play shooting guard. He’s a very good shooter from three-point range. Good catch and shoot player. He has a quick release on his shot and he can shoot with defenders closing out on him. He moves well without the ball making good dives to the rim. With the ball in his hands, he can attack off the dribble. Good box outs.
3. Andrew Porcayo – Village Christian 2025
Porcayo is a very good point guard. He knows how to balance playmaking and scoring. He’s a good ball-handler, very quick off the dribble. He can get to the rim quickly and is able to draw contact and get to the free-throw line. He makes good decisions on the break and can knock down pull-up threes in transition. He can play alongside another ball-handler well and share playmaking duties while moving into an off-guard role too.
4. Terence Haywood – Burroughs 2023
Haywood was very impressive as a scoring big. He has the size of big but has some wing skills. He gets good post position and can score efficiently on the block. He handles the ball and can dribble in closer from the wing to establish himself in the post. He’s comfortable driving baseline and scooping the ball up and finishing with a little hook shot. Can muscle his way through and finish through traffic.
