I was able to attend the event on Saturday April, 16 and I focused on the California teams. Here’s a quick look at some additional standouts I saw.
1. KJ Bradley – UTU College Prep 2022
Bradley was one of the best point guards in the city while at Crenshaw and he’s developed into even more of a dynamic guard. He’s a very solid ball-handler and his vision in the halfcourt with his passing is elite. He can break down the defense with hesitation moves and finish strong in the paint. He’s become a much better catch and shoot three-point shooter and being able to to create his shot off the dribble. He’s bulked up too and gotten stronger.
2. Mattias Ferrell – Windward 2025
Ferrell stood out for his court awareness in the paint. He’s a young player, but is able to get good post position. He has good vision with his back to the basket; he can find cutters along the baseline and he can kick the ball back out to the wings when the defense surrounds him. He’s a very good rebounder both on the offensive and defensive ends. He boxes out well and he rebounds with two hands.
3. Caydon Do – Beckman 2024
Do stood out for his ability to move off the ball. In the game I saw, he put up some points and most of them came from off ball opportunities. He’s a good catch and shoot player and he does a good job spotting up at the three-point line in transition. He also makes good baseline cuts and is ready to catch the pass and go right up and finish at the rim. He’s a good entry passer who immediately cuts as soon as he delivers the pass.
4. Matthew Volpe – WCE Valley Johnson
Volpe stood out the most for his defensive activity. He’s an active defender on the wings; he slides his feet well and keeps the ball-handler in front of him. He has the size and speed to guard multiple positions, he can drop down and contest shots at the rim. He gets good position for rebounds, especially on the offensive end. He’s able to play multiple positions on the offensive end too. He runs he floor well and has good size.
