OWE 17U Guards Dominate Minnesota Select in Win
Started off the day with a Louisiana vs Minnesota clash. OWE from Louisiana secured the 79-64 victory behind their stellar guard play. Class of 2023 6’2” shooting guard Jamaria Clark stole the show with his three-level scoring ability. He made shots from all over the floor including a plethora of pull up threes en route to 29 points. Straight bucket getter! Lefty guard Chris Carpenter complimented him well with his quickness and playmaking while also getting to the hoop for 14 points.
Liked what we saw from Minnesota Select wing Myles Adams. Quality size on the perimeter with a smooth transition game and crashed the offensive glass. He had 16 points in the loss.
North Dakota Phenom Closes Out 17U Win over Illinois Stars
This was a fun 17U contest between a couple of Midwest squads. North Dakota Phenom finished off a successful 3-1 weekend with a 61-56 win over IBA Illinois Stars. North Dakota Phenom combo guard Anthony Doppler dropped 18 points in the win. Crisp guard that makes precise movements off the bounce and has range on his three point shot.
For the IBA Illinois Stars it was another strong performance by Niles Notre Dame small forward Bryce Coleman. He used his size and skill to create mismatches along the way. Started off by using his power game to get to the rim. As the game went on he utilized the jumper which fell finishing with 22 points. The toughness and scoring from inside 15 feet from Joliet West combo guard Jayden Martin also stood out in his 11 point outing.
Florida Suns Impresses Against Illinois Bears 17U
The Illinois Bears kept this one close throughout, but the Florida Suns just had too much fire power in their 65-52 victory. It was 6’2” combo guard Ryan Rivera who had it going getting what he wanted with feathery threes and slick takes to the rack for 28 points. He was completely unguardable for stretches of the contest scoring in transition with ease. Inside we liked what we saw from 6’8” center Hasani Rivera. Physically built post that finished with power on rim runs and was all over the glass for 12 points.
The Carterville high school duo were at it again for the Bears leading the way. Combo guard Caden Hawkins made a couple threes and used his grit in the lane for scoop shots finishing with 12 points. His wing running mate Kade Lustenberger is one of the top marksmen in southern Illinois from both inside and beyond the arc. Did it again in this one with five triples for 19 points.
Star Bigs Put on Show in LA Broncos vs Basketball Paradise 16U Contest
My most anticipated individual matchup of the weekend was this one and it lived up to the billing as Basketball Paradise captured a 71-63 over LA Broncos. Two of the best 2024 posts on the PHC battled as Jason Jakstys and Trey’Dez Green dueled it out. Jakstys team got the win so we will start with him. The 6’9” five man from Yorkville High School is a skilled offensive player, but might be even better defensively. Love how he moves and alters shots on the interior. High level shot blocking presence that just has a tremendous feel for impacting the game both inside and on the perimeter. Offensively he hit several mid-range jumpers, hook shots, and dunks on rim runs going for 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Also for Basketball Paradise Yorkville Christian wing Bryce Salek continues his emergence this spring. Smooth scoring wing that has some pop and defends well too. Finished with 12 points. Nice stretch in the second half for Bolingbrook lead guard Josh Aniceto. High IQ passer also got in the lane for several nifty finishes.
The LA Broncos might have the top 2024 prospect on the PHC in Trey’Dez Green. The 6’8” power forward is a lefty that can play with both power and skill. Loves to go to his hook shot on the block, power baseline takes, and use his strength inside to finish. Popped a three from the perimeter along with using his athleticism on both the glass and defensively for 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Broderick Brooks is a 6’4” two guard on the Broncos that had a nice outing as well. Projectable frame on the wing who loves to get out and run! He went for 14 points. Another young wing to track on this squad is 2025 6’1” Xavier Ferguson who dropped 13 points.
Wisconsin Crusaders 17U Tops Middlesex Magic in Battle of 3-1 Squads on Weekend
Two of the more impressive squads on the weekend battled in this one as the Wisconsin Crusaders scored a 59-47 over Middlesex Magic. Levi Birkholtz is a scoring two guard that is tough as nails! The kid is a winner that uses his upper body strength along with skill to get where he needs. Posts up smaller wings. Crisp handles. Scored 24 points. Super sleeper D1 prospect.
NEBC 17U Closes Weekend Strong With Win over Hoops4Health
Last game I caught was NEBC’s 82-61 victory over Hoops4Health in the 17U pool. NEBC finished the weekend with their best performance winning by 21. Pair of lanky wings really stood out. Class of 2023 6’5” wing Damani Barley is all arms and legs. He had his feathery shot falling over and over again as he drained six of them with his free and easy stroke. Impactful on the defensive end and in the open floor as he netted 29 points. Really liked the upside of 2024 wing Devonte Reed. Bouncy 6’4” small forward was a pogo stick around the basket for tip dunks, rebounds, and acrobatic finishes. He had 21 points. Sharp shooting small forward Ryan Kelly did what he does which is drain triples off the catch notching four of them for 12 points. Inside Declan Ryan did his thing as the big bodied five man has a soft touch and crafty footwork. Very good area rebounder had 12 points.
Marist shooting guard Xavier Sulaiman was the main offensive weapon for Hoops4Health in this contest. Mixed in a variety of threes, acrobatic finishes, and getting to the line for 22 points.
