Here’s a look at part three of the standouts from the event.
Josiah Banks Josiah Banks 6'4" | SF Roanoke Catholic | 2023 State VA | 6’4” WF | GATO Academy 2023
Banks looks like a much improved player after reclassifying to the 2023 class and transferring to Roanoke Catholic, as he is playing with a lot more confidence and looks better in almost every facet of the game too. The 6’4” wing shot the basketball with confidence and made shots from deep, he showed good athleticism finishing above the rim and rebounding well and he plays with good toughness and is a pest on both ends of the floor.
Ryan Steger Ryan Steger 6'2" | SG James River (Buchanan) | 2023 State VA | 6’1” WG | GATO Academy 2023
Steger was part of a James River team in Buchanan that was just a few minutes away from a chance at the state championship game, and he has put together quite the career by scoring the ball and knowing his game and playing efficiently, which he did at the event too. He’s an excellent shooter who moves well off the ball and has deep range and is consistent from deep, he cuts and finishes in the lane off of tough passes and he can get hot and fill it up in bunches when he gets it going.
Jacob Estrada Jacob Estrada 6'4" | PF Roanoke Catholic | 2023 State VA | 6’4” PF | GATO Academy 2023
Estrada was very productive for this balanced GATO squad as the 6’4” forward played much bigger than his frame would suggest and showed good versatility as a mismatch guy as well. He’s a strong body who moves well and is pretty athletic for his size, he can step out and shoot from deep and the midrange and is able to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim and he rebounds well and plays with a good motor too.
Jackson Crawford Jackson Crawford 5'11" | PG Lord Botetourt | 2023 State VA | 5’8” PG | GATO Academy 2023
Crawford is a very fun player to watch as he may not look like it but he has a lot of flair to his game and is very crafty and skilled off the bounce as both a scorer and a playmaker. The 5’8” lead guard has a tight handle and great anticipation with the ball in his hands to make the right move, he got in the lane consistently where he finished over bigger defenders and made plays for others and he showed he can make shots from deep as well.
Eli Allen | 6’3” WG | GATO Academy 2023
The West Virginia Class 1 POY is new to this GATO team and he brings a little bit of everything to the table as a well rounded wing who impacts the game in a number of different ways. He’s strong and isn’t afraid of contact on either ends of the floor, he can put it on the deck and get to spots to make shots in the midrange, he has a good IQ and makes winning plays on both sides of the ball and he rebounds with the best of them despite not being the biggest guy.
