In this piece we breakdown what the point guard position looks like in the class.
Four of our top 10 overall players come from the point guard position, which include the No. 1 overall player, Corona Centennial’s Jared McCain Jared McCain 6'3" | PG Centennial | 2023 State #24 Nation CA-S , and joining him among those decorated spots are the Sierra Canyon duo of Mike Price Mike Price 6'2" | PG Corona Centennial | 2023 State #162 Nation CA-S and Bronny James Bronny James 6'2" | PG Sierra Canyon | 2023 State #43 Nation CA-S along with Taft’s AJ Johnson AJ Johnson 6'5" | PG Taft | 2023 #26 Nation CA-S .
Since we already covered those four prospects in-depth in our Top 10 Breakdown, we’ll dive into the other six point guard prospects who round out the top 10 in this position.
Tyler Rolison Tyler Rolison 6'0" | PG St. Bernard | 2023 State #150 Nation CA-S , St. Bernard, No. 5 PG/No. 19 overall – Rolison’s biggest impact on the game is his sheer confidence with the ball in his hands. The 6-footer is a fearless scorer in both transition and half-court settings who can get into the paint at-will and finish over length with floaters and tough layups off the glass. As the season went on Rolison showed his high IQ and improved decision-making as he led the Vikings to a CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship.
Kollen Murphy Kollen Murphy 6'2" | PG Colony | 2023 State CA-S , Colony, No. 6 PG/No. 24 overall – Murphy has such good positional size and speed at 6-feet-3. The lefty point guard is best when pushing the pace on the break and either getting into the lane for finishes or finding open shooters or cutters. Murphy can hit spot-up three’s with consistency and has adopted a pass-first mentality and high basketball IQ which moved him from a combo guard spot to point guard spot in our most recent rankings.
Jimmy Baker Jimmy Baker 6'2" | PG Etiwanda | 2023 State CA-S , Etiwanda, No. 7 PG/No. 26 overall – There are few point guards in the class who can match Baker’s combination of speed and strength. The 6-footer is built like a running back or defensive back, but has the fluidity and speed on the basketball court to be a menace in the transition setting. Baker knifes through the defense and gets into the paint whenever he wants and can finish through and over size around the basket. While Baker still has work to do with his catch-and-shoot jumper from three-point range, he’s an elite on-ball defender and that takes his value up a couple of spots.
Osiris Nalls Osiris Nalls 6'4" | PG Sierra Canyon | 2023 State CA-S , Viewpoint, No. 8 PG/No. 41 overall – Nalls is one of those guys who is just wired to score. At 6-feet-4 with speed in transition and quickness in the half-court, he can blow-by defenders in all situations and get to the basket for high-percentage finishes. Another aspect of Nalls’ game that makes him such an offensive threat is his ability to stretch the floor with a consistent catch-and-shoot three-point shot.
Giovani Goree Giovani Goree 5'11" | PG Viewpoint | 2023 State CA-S , Viewpoint, No. 9 PG/No. 43 overall – Goree is a player who is tough to keep in front because of his physical strength and speed when getting downhill on the break or in the half-court. The 5-foot-11 point guard, like Rolison mentioned above, is as confident as they come with the ball in his hands and has the ability to take over a game down the stretch.
Angelo Gil Angelo Gil 6'1" | PG Mission Bay | 2023 State CA-S , Mission Bay, No. 10 PG/No. 46 overall – Gil checks in as the top point guard from the San Diego region of our coverage area and he does a little bit of everything for Mission Bay. The 6-foot-1 junior had the responsibility to score, distribute, rebound, defend the other team’s best perimeter player and had a standout season doing all of those things at a high level.
