There were many great single-game performances turned in this past week. In order to recap them, we’ve broken them into three categories:
Top Single-Game Performances (non-championship)
Top Championship Game Performances
Top One-and-Done Performances
Without further adieu, here are the Top Single Game Performances from 6A-4A this past week:
David Cobin David Cobin 5'10" | PG De Soto | 2024 State #285 Nation KS , 5-foot-9 guard, 2024, DeSoto (pictured):
Arguably the top single-game performance in all classes was turned in by Cobin in the 5A semifinal against St. James. Cobin scored 23 points after halftime, including the game winner at the buzzer on a driving bank shot. Cobin finished with 32, which tied with Galena’s Brett Sarwinski Brett Sarwinski 5'10" | PG Galena | 2022 State KS for the most points in a tournament game this year. Cobin capped one of the best sophomore seasons of anyone in Kansas with some outstanding tournament games.
Grant Stubblefield Grant Stubblefield 6'2" | PG Blue Valley Northwest | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Blue Valley Northwest:
It would be pretty easy to argue that Stubblefield had the second-best game in the tournament, at least among the big schools. He broke the back of the Free State Firebirds in the 6A semifinals, getting to the rim repeatedly, scoring or getting fouled when not dishing out four assists. He hit 9-14 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and also hit 6-9 free throws for 26 huge points, more than half his team’s 51. And his defense was big in holding the Free State guards down.
Joe Otting Joe Otting 6'3" | C Hayden | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-3 center, 2023, Hayden:
Otting’s game against Eudora gets the third spot on this list because of the opponent. Hayden took down the 4A top-seed Eudora, and Otting led the way against the Cardinals’ huge and athletic bigs. Otting spun, faked, dipped and powered his way to 23 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. He cleared room to grab 9 rebounds as well.
Ty Henry Ty Henry 6'3" | SG Seaman | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-4 guard, 2022 Seaman:
Like Otting, Henry gets special credit for what he did against a #1 seed. Seaman took down Kapaun in a shocker, with Henry hitting 9-10 shots, including 3-3 from deep. It seemed like a different Viking stepped up in every game on their magical run to the title. In the opener, it was Henry going off for 21 points.
Seth Madron Seth Madron 6'2" | SG Mcpherson | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2022, McPherson:
Madron is one of the most versatile players in 4A. Though just 6-foot-1, Madron gets in the paint and muscles with the big boys. He’s a great leaper and athletic enough to be a difference maker in the paint. He stuffed the stat sheet against Buhler in the opening round, getting 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
Brian Hawthorne Brian Hawthorne 6'2" | PG St. James | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-3 guard, 2023, St. James Academy:
Last on the list of ‘Top Single Game Performances’ is Hawthorne, partly because his came in a consolation round match against Maize. Typically, Hawthorne is found lighting it up from deep, but against Maize, Hawthorne was on the attack, resulting in 9-10 from the free throw line. He finished with 22 points while also dishing out 4 assists. He also grabbed 3 rebounds and 3 steals, leading the way to the consolation win over Maize.
