But some guys make an impression even in just one playoff game. Even in a opening-round loss, they leave a mark.
There were many great single-game performances turned in this past week. In order to recap them, we’ve broken them into three categories:
Top Single-Game Performances (non-championship)
Top Championship Game Performances
Top One-and Done Performances
Here are the Top One-and-Done Performances from 2A-1A this past week:
Taylor Cable Taylor Cable 6'1" | SF Ness City | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-1 forward, 2022, Ness City:
Cable gets the top spot on this list because the Eagles’ loss was a hard-fought, close battle with the defending champ South Gray. He hit 12-15 attempts from the field as Ness City forced the Rebels to win it late. The senior, who averaged 18.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, scored 25 in his final outing.
Charlie Russell Charlie Russell 6'4" | PF Trego | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-4 forward, 2022, Trego:
Russell was a fighter his whole career, and he went down in a fight against one of the top teams in the state, St. Marys. Russell scored 24 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and registered 2 assists, much of it coming in the second half when Trego battled to come back from a deficit. Russell hit 10-21 from the field. On the season, Russell led the Golden Eagles with 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds.
Cody Oden, 6-foot-1 forward, 2022, Sterling:
Sterling took an early lead against Lyndon, and hung in there for most of the game. Oden led the way with 22 points, more than half the Black Bears’ point total. The senior hit 10 of 23 attempts against the eventual third place team.
Jalen VanBecelaere, 5-foot-11 guard, 2023, Colgan:
VanBecelaere deserves mention because his team was also in it to the wire against Valley Falls. The junior scored 16 points and got 8 boards in the 64-61 loss.
Damian Foster Damian Foster 5'9" | PG Waverly | 2022 State KS , 5-foot-9 guard, 2022, Waverly:
Yet another guy who kept his team in the game against a tough opponent, Foster scored 23 points in Waverly’s 63-57 loss to Northern Valley, a game that was tied at the start of the final period. Foster hit 8-17 from the field, including three 3-pointers.
Peyton Ryan Peyton Ryan 5'9" | CG Central Plains | 2024 State KS , 5-foot-11 guard, 2024, Central Plains:
Central Plains turned their season around with a nice run to the playoffs after winning just one game in the regular season. Their luck ran out when they had to face Hanover in the first round, and this one wasn’t close. But the sophomore Ryan deserves credit for his fine leadership down the stretch, as well as for the 23 points he put up on the defending champs. Ryan hit 8-18 shots, including 7-13 from deep. He also registered 5 rebounds.
