The strong 6-foot-6, 210-pound junior forward has been a huge reason why the Warriors ran rampant through Mid-Valley Conference play and are now standing tall as they get ready to play their first playoff game at home on Friday night.
“It started out kind of tough as we were trying to mold together,” May said. “We had a bunch of playing styles that we had to all turn into one team. But we got it figured out and it started to click.”
May has arguably been Philomath’s top performer in many ways. With his size and strength, he’s been hard to handle down in the post yet he has the ability and skills to face the basket and either attack off the dribble or drain the three. The talent is there and it’s been clear this season that May has been putting it all together.
“I’m still trying to figure out when to take shots or when to pass up some looks,” May said. “I’ve got some good teammates out there that know how to shoot the ball, so it’s all about spreading out the love. So I’m trying to figure out the balance of when to shoot it, when to drive, when to pass.”
May sharpened his skills this off-season playing AAU basketball with the Oregon Prospects at the 16U level. “I had never played AAU ball before then and I was looking forward to getting out because I hadn’t had any exposure at all,” May said. “It was fun and I had a good summer. Whenever I get to hoop that’s the best time.”
A multi-sport athlete, May is also a talented football player. College has started to enter his mind and while he’s staying open to everything, there’s no question basketball could be an option.
“I’m kind of undecided right now, whatever opportunities come we’ll see,” May said. “I’d like to stay somewhat close to home. But I love to hoop, so whatever happens, happens.”
Philomath is the #5 seed in the 4A playoffs and hosts North Marion on Friday night. A win there would send them to Marshfield where May believes the team could really do some damage.
“I think we have the opportunity to make a long run into the post-season,” May said. “We’ve got all the weapons to make it work.”
May currently ranks as the #19 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
