Continue ReadingThe NIAA boys state tournament ran from Thurs February 24th through Saturday, February 26th. This year the tournament is split between two sites. Reno will host 5A and 2A while Las Vegas will host 4A 3A and 1A from the Cox Pavillion. I got a chance to check out the 1A quarterfinals, and Championship game, providing me with a look at some prospects that I seldom get a chance to see. The Title game was between Green Valley Christian and Pahranagagat Valley with GVC taking home the crown. Here’s a look at our All-Tournament Team.
MVP: Joshua Valencia Joshua Valencia 6'3" | C GV Christian | 2023 State NV 6’3 C Green Valley Christian 2023 (#46PHN 2023) (featured image) – Dominating display throughout the tournament. I thought Valencia was the one player there was no matchup for. He showed tremendous hands, catching the ball in traffic, and tremendous feet, using ballerina-type spin moves to create space and finish around the rim. Behind his play, GVC took home the 1A crown.
1st Team
David Thurman David Thurman 6'3" | PF Green Valley Christian | 2022 State NV 6’4 SF Green Valley Christian 2022 (#110PHN 2022) – Thurman was remarkable this week. His ability to play the high post made it impossible for teams to key on Valencia. I was thoroughly impressed with his defensive ability as he defended 3 through 5 while protecting the rim for his club.
Paul Lewis 6’2 SG Pahranagat Valley 2022 – Lewis is a powerfully built guard that powered the Panther’s offense. He scored in the post and was tough to defend when playing downhill. Behind his efforts, PVHS reached the state final for the 2nd consecutive season.
Angel Orozco 6’1 PF Pyramid Lake 2022 – Orozco was a rebounding monster. The senior forward showed a good second jump, allowing him to grab both his and teammates’ missed shots. He killed from the baseline against the zone catching and finishing at a high rate.
Andre White Andre White 5'10" | CG Mineral County | 2023 State NV 5’10 CG Mineral County 2023 – I was impressed with the passing skills of White. The Combo has good vision and instincts and managed to find open players quickly with accurate passes. Thought his playmaking skills were key to helping MC reach the semifinal round.
Brennan Killoran Brennan Killoran 5'10" | SF GV Christian | 2023 State NV 5’10 SF Green Valley Christian 2023 – I just don’t think you win titles unless you have players like Killoran. The 5’10 guard sacrificed his body countless times for the team. Killoran took his game to another level offensively, doing a good job of attacking in transition, putting pressure on the defense.
2nd Team
Mason Johnson 5’9 SG Eureka 2024
Demetrius Ivanhoff 5’10 PG Spring Mountain 2022
Ryan Jaramillo 5’9 SF Mineral County 2022
Tristan Keo 5’11 PF Pyramid Lake 2023
Kobi Fiatoa 6’4 PF Pahranagat Valley 2022
