The tryouts started with a warmup, ballhandling, and shooting drills. From there they went into transition drills, and 1 on 1 work. After that, the players went through half-court 2 on 2 simulations and some 3 on 3. From there the freshmen went up and down and scrimmaged. They had a good showing with kids from across the state of North Dakota and one player from South Dakota. In this article, PHD is looking at the impressive players from today’s ECI tryouts.
ECI had a handful of players that could not make the tryouts. With the Class B State Tournament going on, some of their players are still going with the high school season.
Check back in a week or two for write-ups on the ECI rosters.
15U Tryouts
Aric Winczewski Aric Winczewski 6'2" | CG Minot | 2025 State ND |6-0 G| Minot
He is a great communicator and very vocal. Aric covers a lot of ground with his first step and he is not afraid of contact. Winczwski has good feet and he can finish with 1 or 2 feet around the basket. He showed a smooth step-back crossover. Aric is a physical defender and finisher. Winczewski showed great hustle and an even better attitude.
Grayson Schaeffer Grayson Schaeffer 6'5" | SF Minot | 2025 State ND |6-5 F| Minot
He was by far one of the best players in this age group. He is a fantastic finisher with both hands. Grayson showed a swift and smooth spin-move. He also showed a nice turn-around baby-hook shot. Schaeffer has an impressive first step. During the 1 on 1 portion, Grayson was basically unstopable. He was scoring at will. Schaeffer blocked many shots throughout the day. His most impressive block may have been when he sprinted back on defense and swatted a shot into the stands. Grayson looks to be an excellent rebounder and I like how he high-pointed the ball.
Pearce Parks Pearce Parks 6'2" | SG Grand Forks Red River | 2025 State ND |6-2 G/F| Grand Forks Red River
He is a strong and put-together player. Parks is very athletic and he can play inside and out. Parks showed a sweet spin move. Pearce showed that he can hit the 3-ball, he knocked a couple down from college range. During the scrimmage portion, Parks looked good hitting a 3-ball as the trail-4. He is an impressive athlete.
Grady Swanson Grady Swanson 6'1" | SG Bismarck | 2025 State ND |5-10 G| Bismarck
He was one of the best shooters in the gym today. Swanson was cashing in on a regular basis from beyond the arc. I liked his clean footwork when nailing a 3-ball in the corner off the catch. His mid-range pull-up game might have been the best in the gym. Grady also showed a quick & tight crossover.
Brady Westphal Brady Westphal 6'2" | SG West Fargo Horace | 2025 State ND |5-10 G| Horace
He is a smooth lefty with nice handles. Brady did a nice job of taking care of the rock and moving the ball around. Westphal had quick and efficient cuts that led to easy baskets. He knows when to push the tempo and when to slow down.
Carson Schumacher |G| Bismarck
He is a lefty that had multiple tough finishes at the rim with a hand in his face. I liked the way that Carson ran the floor and scored in transition. Schumacher showed good body control when going up for a shot with defenders in the paint.
Mag-Audries Cummings |G| Jamestown
He is a quick guard that plays hard and is not afraid to dive on the floor for the ball. Mag looked aggressive in the scrimmage and slashed to make plays. He also nailed a 15-footer and a corner 3-pointer. I liked his hustle and his effort.
Payton Schell |G| Minot
He made some sneaky impressive plays on the defensive side of the ball. Schell looked like a pick-pocket and he blocked shots. He showed good hands on defense which led to deflections & steals. Payton also knocked down a smooth 3-pointer.
Carson Busek Carson Busek 5'11" | SG Shanley | 2025 State ND |G| Shanley
He is a lefty that played hard and hustled for rebounds. I liked the looks of his left-handed finger-roll finishes. I like the way Carson moves on defense. His outside hand on defense led to deflections.
