Instead we have the Calvin Cougars and Gibsland-Coleman Bulldogs vying for the title. The Bulldogs fought back and cut the Calvin lead to five (33-28) by the half.
Joseph Adams
Even though Adams spent most of the game in foul trouble, he showed that he is a very skilled basketball player. The 6’1″ senior guard has a strong upper body and takes contact when he penetrates the paint. His strength allows him to overpower guards and forwards to complete layups. Adams is also very good from the high post and makes good decisions from that area. While the Cougars did not win the title, his 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 steals were huge in keeping Calvin in the contest.
Wayne Huckaby Wayne Huckaby 6'0" | PG Calvin | 2022 State LA
Huckaby is a guard who knows how to play the game. He knows how to handle the ball and how to get it to his teammates who can score. The 5’11″ senior guard did a very good job at handling the constant Bulldog pressure while scoring 17 points for his team. He did a good job of always being on balance whether it was shooting or handling the pressure. Because he is so adept at handling the ball, Huckaby may find a home on the next level on the hardwood.
De’Avery Durham
Gibsland-Coleman may have a big time player in 8th grade guard De’Avery Durham. The 5’9″ guard is small but active and has a quick set of hands. He showed the ability to deflect passes and disrupt the Calvin offense. When he gets ahead of the defense in transition situations, there is no catching him. He is very good with his left runner that he makes off the glass as well. His 17 points and defense sparked the Bulldogs in their victory. He showed that the moment was not too big for him and that he will be a player to reckon with in Class C.
Terrance James Terrance James 6'4" | SF Gibsland-Coleman | 2023 State LA
It was tough sledding for James for a large portion of the first half as he got two quick fouls and turned the ball over a couple of times. However, the title game’s Most Outstanding Player managed to do other things to make his mark on the game. James did a good job commanding the defensive glass finishing with 15 rebounds. In the second half, James had several dunks in transition while scoring 13 second half points. He finished with a 20 point and 15 rebound double-double helping the Bulldogs win their latest state title.
Dontarious Coleman Dontarious Coleman 6'4" | SF Gibsland-Coleman | 2022 State LA
Coleman may have only scored six points in the title game victory over Calvin. However, his 9 boards and 9 blocks were crucial to the Bulldog victory. He has incredible timing and was very good at waiting for the shooter to commit before he went up to block a shot. On his rebounds, Coleman simply used his athleticism to out jump the Calvin players. His work in the paint cannot go unnoticed as Gibsland-Coleman will take home the Class C trophy large part due to his contributions on defense.
