Continue ReadingEdmond North played host to a great night of basketball in Class 5A. In the opener, school district rivals engaged in a close battle with a state tournament appearance on the line. While the night cap dazzled with hot shooting, intense play as two small town teams dueled in a win or go home match up.
Del City 44 Midwest City 38
It’s always a tense affair when rivals Midwest City and Del City square off. After early losses to Class 6A progams the Del City Eagles came into the game riding a 18 game winning streak, which included a January 50-41 win over Midwest City. While the Bombers of Midwest City didn’t have quite as stellar record at 18-8, they have claimed impressive wins over top Class 6A squads, Edmond Memorial, Putnam City North and Putnam City West. With top tier athletes all over the court provided crowd pleasing dunks and plays, the overall tone of the game was very defensive. While the Bombers would push their rivals at times, Del City was often a step ahead and would earn a hard earned victory to punch their ticket to the State Tournament.
Top Performers
Brandon Garrison Brandon Garrison 6'8" | C Evans | 2023 State #33 Nation OK , 6’9 Junior Forward, Del City
Thanks to his combination of size, mobility and defensive instincts, Garrison is the biggest game changer in the state. He’s a monster on the glass and is often altering shots if not outright blocking them. When switched onto smaller defenders, the big man clearly takes pride in being nimble and smart enough to stay in front of them. He uses a combination of his big wing span and good awareness of angles to stay in front of smaller players and turn the tables on the potential mismatch. It wasn’t his best game on offense, but he still was able to be active in transition and as an offensive rebounder to make an impact on that end of the court.
Percy Green Percy Green 6'4" | SF Del City | 2023 State OK , 6’3 Junior Wing, Del City
The D1 caliber juniors for the Eagles rightfully draw a lot of attention. But the importance of Green as a shooter and ballhandler will be crucial if they are to win their second straight State Title next week. At times Del City’s offense can be bogged down in the halfcourt, and Green was the one who stepped up in the second half to provide big scores and even a dash of playmaking to set up teammates. He lived in the midrange, knocking down tough jumpers off pull ups to extend and maintain the Eagles’ advantage. With next level size and ever improving shooting ability, Green will likely be a popular target for regional small colleges this summer and as a senior.
Jacobi Sebock Jacobi Sebock 6'5" | SF Midwest City | 2022 State OK , 6’5 Senior Wing/Forward, Midwest City
Explosion. It’s what Sebock brings to the table. He has turned himself into one of the most athletic players in the state. In the past there have been similar elite level athletes like Sebock in Oklahoma, but they often only shined in transition where they had cleaner runaways to take off. It doesn’t matter who’s in the way, Sebock will attack with reckless abandon to grab rebounds, attempt to finish through contact or block shots. The motor on the Bomber senior is second to none in Oklahoma.
The senior isn’t only a hustle athletic player, he has a good face up type game as a scorer. He nailed multiple midrange jumpers when attacking. Given the current nature of the transfer portal and bigger programs relying on adding experience to the roster, the Junior College and D2 are the likely paths for the always improving Sebock. Both could provide great opportunities for the hardworking senior to continue his basketball career.
Artez Young Artez Young PG Midwest City | 2022 OK , 6’0 Senior Guard, Midwest City
Midwest City has long had a “type” at guard. Bombers guards are often on the smaller side, but they play bigger thanks to a combination of skill and grit. Young fit into that model, as he was still able to get inside against Del City and create for his teammates, while also trying to push the tempo in transition. Along with his driving to create, he knocked down multiple pull up jumpers in the midrange.
Ardmore 77 El Reno 68 OT
In one of the best games all season, both teams hit big shot after big shot in order to keep their season alive. El Reno took an early lead but Ardmore rallied back and looked in control of the second half. But the Indians of El Reno showed discipline in the final minutes, they played to their strengths with an inside focused game, and eventually rallied to force OT. In overtime, the experience of the Tigers (Class 5A Semifinalist last season) proved to be too much and they pulled away to face Midwest City on Saturday night.
DD Coleman DD Coleman 6'0" | SG Ardmore | 2022 State OK , 6’0 Senior Guard, Ardmore
The lanky scorer was productive off the dribble. He was able to create good separation for himself on mid range pulls up. Then when driving, the defense would often collapse on Coleman, which allowed him to showcase his floor vision by kicking it out to the plethora of shooters on the Tigers roster.
Dion Brown, 5’10 Senior Guard, Ardmore
The senior sharpshooter was hot from the jump, and was determined to not let his high school career end on Friday at Edmond North. Brown hit at least four three pointers on the night
James Reveles, 6’3 Junior Forward, El Reno
The skilled forward battled all night downlow. He’s a true throwback post, with a variety of post up moves and counters. He knows how to use his strong frame to create space or finish through contact. Revels even has face up skills as a driver. The next step in the post player’s evolution will involve becoming a better midrange shooter. Defenders sagged off him all night, making it harder for him to drive and attack. A better shot from 15-18 feet would open more spacing for himself and his team.
Jonathan Reed, 6’0 Freshman Wing, El Reno
El Reno has a couple other notable freshmen in Evan Roman-Nose and Devon Tre-Davis. But it was Reed who stepped up off the bench and hit big three point after three pointer. He was even the one to tie the game in the final five seconds and force overtime with a corner jumper. The youngster had ice in his veins during a big game.
