After 4A and 3A had the Big House to themselves on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, it was time for Class 2A to take center stage on Thursday afternoon and evening. In this post, we’ll be recapping the four quarterfinal games. Check out who’s headed to the semifinals and see which players stood out throughout Thursday’s games.
#3 CASHION 50, LATTA 28
We wouldn’t see an upset in the first game of the day as unranked Latta got ran off the floor, losing to #3 Cashion 50-28. The Wildcats made sure that this wouldn’t be a game that made headlines by dominating the Panthers from start to finish. A 7-0 run put Cashion up, 90 seconds into the game and they would never look back. Latta would struggle getting the ball across half court and turnovers plagued them throughout the afternoon. They finished with 16 turnovers on the afternoon.
The Wildcats have been led by the senior trio of Austin Frazier Austin Frazier 6'1" | PG Cashion | 2022 OK , Jonah Jenkins Jonah Jenkins 6'0" | PG Cashion | 2022 State OK and Vance Raney Vance Raney 6'2" | PG Cashion | 2022 State OK all season but it was football star Landon LaGasse who could not be stopped on Thursday. The All State wide receiver would finish with 19 points and went 4-5 from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats would turn it on in the second half. Despite controlling the game from the start, Latta only trailed 21-13 at halftime. Cashion would make sure that we wouldn’t see a comeback on Thursday, outscoring the Panthers 15-4 in the third quarter to put the Panthers away for good.
#4 MORRISON 42, #2 OKLAHOMA UNION 39
In the second game of the evening, it looked like we would have another game ending in a blowout but that would not be the case. The defending champions from Oklahoma Union would not go away but Morrison escaped with a 42-39 victory to eliminate the Cougars in the quarterfinals. Senior guard Brody Roe would end up being the hero for the Wildcats on Thursday. He would hit a runner in the lane with 8.3 seconds left and after converting the free throw, the Wildcats would go up by 3.
The shot from Oklahoma Union at the buzzer would be short and the Cougars’ furious rally would fall short. In the third quarter, Morrison extended their lead to 34-19 at one point. The champs would respond by outscoring the Wildcats 20-3 as Morrison went ice cold from the floor. Oklahoma Union would ultimately take the lead late in the fourth quarter before Morrison would respond late.
Morrison was led by Gabe Battles and Briggs Roe, who finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. On the other side, Oklahoma Union had two players finishing in double figures with Kade Hollingshed and Jaiden Kennard, who finished with 15 and 10 points on the evening.
#1 DALE 60, #9 HOOKER 43
Top ranked Dale and sophomore superstar Dayton Forsythe Dayton Forsythe 6'3" | PG Dale | 2024 State #206 Nation OK are moving on to the semifinals after knocking out Hooker 60-43. Forsythe finished the game with 32 points on 12-17 shooting. He also grabbed 12 rebounds and had 6 assists. Hooker jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter but the Pirates would outscore the Bulldogs 19-6 in the second quarter to go up for good.
Forsythe is widely considered one of the top prospects in Oklahoma’s 2024 class and he was able to show why on Thursday night on the Big House floor. From the opening tip, Forsythe was in control of the Dale offense. Whether it was hitting floaters in the lane, pull up jumpers or finding the open man when the defense crashed on him, he simply could not be stopped.
The Pirates move on to the semifinals on Friday and will face the winner of Pocola and Silo, which is the final game of the evening.
#7 SILO 55, #5 POCOLA 38
#7 Silo had to wait nearly 50 years for a state tournament appearance but it was well worth the wait on Thursday night. The Rebels knocked off Pocola, ending their 22-game winning streak and punching their ticket to the semifinals on Friday to face top-ranked Dale. The Rebels used a run late in the first quarter and into the second quarter to take the lead from Pocola and held off several rallies from the Indians.
Silo finished the first quarter on a 9-0 run and would never trail for the rest of the game. The Rebels had three players finish in double figures. Sophomore big man Ethan Wilkerson Ethan Wilkerson 6'7" | PF Madill | 2024 State OK led all scorers with 17 points and he also added 11 rebounds. Carter Parker and Charlie Gardner each added 15 points for the Rebels in the win. Wilkerson picked up his second foul halfway thru the first quarter. It was a gutsy call to leave him in the game at that point. He only picked up one other foul the rest of the night.
