Continue ReadingThe Sophomore class is a good one and we’ve already got over 100 ranked players in the class before their 16u AAU seasons start. There are several kids with modest statistics but big time potential so it’s been a tough class to figure out so far. These are the top Shooting Guards in the 2024 rankings. This does not include players who were in the top 10 of the rankings.
Jacob Tucker Jacob Tucker 6'3" | SG Fairdale | 2024 State KY , Fairdale – Tucker is explosive on offense as he can take flight and finish above the rim but also capable of putting up huge scoring numbers including a 40 point game this season. Jacob has been a go-to scoring option for 2 years now for the Bulldogs and has to be considered among the best Sophomores in the Derby City. His ceiling as a prospect is still TBD but he should be on the radar for every scholarship level school in the state.
Christian Doerr Christian Doerr 6'3" | SG Evangel Christian | 2024 State KY , Manual – Doerr had a big season for the Crimson and was a big reason why they had such a successful season despite being one of the younger teams in the region. Christian can get downhill and score in the paint and also is efficient as a catch and shoot player on the wing. As he gets a little stronger, Doerr should be a better finisher around the rim and is likely to have several “And 1” opportunities each game.
Jackson Washington Jackson Washington 6'2" | SG Christian Academy Of Louisville | 2024 State KY , CAL – One of the most elite shooters in the state, BB has good size at 6’4 and can get his shot off in a hurry. He’s definitely a specialist as a shooter right now but there’s no reason he can’t expand his game and become a better driver with the ball in his hands. Washington has a frame that should support added bulk also. Once he locks into being a defender, there’s no reason BB shouldn’t be a versatile defender also thanks to his size and athleticism.
Brett Decker Brett Decker 6'2" | PG Central Hardin | 2024 State #211 Nation KY , Central Hardin – Decker had a huge season for the Bruins and established himself as one of the best players in the 5th region for the next few seasons. Brett had a school record 40 point game this year and could have a breakout AAU season as one of the lead guards for the newly established Power Circle. Decker is a three level scorer but is most effective when attacking the rim on a downhill drive.
Dalton Hicks Dalton Hicks 6'2" | PG Fairdale | 2024 State KY , Fairdale – A breakout player in the 6th region this season, Hicks and Tucker (mentioned above) helped elevate Fairdale back into the regional tournament and set them up for future success. They scored nearly 40 points per game combined. Dalton stepped into a big role this year and proved he was up to the challenge of battling the top talent in Louisville every night out. Keep an eye on him moving forward as he will be the engine that makes Fairdale go for the next 2 seasons.
