Continue ReadingIt has been a crazy couple of seasons in Southern California high school basketball. From COVID-19 canceling spring and summer club sessions to delaying an entire high school season and causing some game cancellations, we were finally able to get a season that allowed us to get a complete look at how the 2022 class stacks up which leads to our most recent updated rankings for the senior class.
In this piece we take a look at how the point guard position breaks down. From the top-ranked signal callers to the guys who could out-play their rankings at the college level.
Top Ranked PGs
1. Donovan Dent Donovan Dent 6'1" | PG Corona Centennial | 2022 State CA-S , Corona Centennial – Dent takes the top spot in our point guard rankings for obvious reasons. The 6-foot-1 senior was the most dynamic player on a CIF State and Southern Section Open Division championship team that took down a lot of talented squads en route to earning that title. Dent’s ability to control the pace of a game offensively, set the tone defensively, combined with being a lethal transition and half-court driver and scorer made him the easy choice as the No. 1 point guard and No. 2 overall prospect in our final 2022 rankings.
2. Roddie Anderson Roddie Anderson 6'1" | PG Fountain Valley | 2022 State CA-S , Fountain Valley – Anderson is one of the most dynamic athletes at the point guard position that we have in Southern California. The UC San Diego-bound senior has an uncanny combination of speed, explosiveness, strength and body control that made him a freight train type of guy to deal with in the transition setting. Anderson has potential to be a lockdown defender at the next level, as well.
3. Christian Watson Christian Watson 6'4" | PG Long Beach Poly | 2022 State CA-S , Long Beach Poly – The 6-foot-4 senior continued to get better and better as the season went on. Watson makes an impact on multiple aspects of the game from scoring to distributing to defense and controlling the pace of the game. One of the major reasons why Watson is ranked so highly is the fact that he is young for his class and still has a lot of untapped potential left in his game.
4. Benny Gealer Benny Gealer 6'1" | PG Rolling Hills Prep | 2022 State CA-S , Rolling Hills Prep – Benny G was the trigger man and dynamic scoring threat for Harvey Kitani’s offense at Rolling Hills Prep for the last three seasons. The 6-foot-1 Stanford-bound senior is a fearless scorer and playmaker who had the ability to change the complexion of the game with one shot, drive or pass. Gealer’s knack for striking fear in an opponent and putting them on their heels made him an unpredictable guy to have to defend.
5. Devon Arlington Devon Arlington 6'3" | PG San Marcos | 2022 State CA-S , San Marcos – Arlington had a Player of the Year type of season down in San Diego which was cut short prior to the playoffs due to injury. The 6-foot-3 Yale-signee is the ultimate competitor. He has a killer instinct, toughness on both sides of the ball and a winning attitude where he will do whatever his team needs for them to come out on top. Arlington improved his three-point shooting stroke this season and still had his bread and butter of physical drives and finishes around the basket.
Who Could Out-Play Their Ranking?
Jaayden Bush Jaayden Bush 5'11" | PG St. Anthony | 2022 State CA-S , St. Anthony – Bush was one of the most consistent performers at the point guard position this season. The high IQ lefty led St. Anthony to a deep playoff run with his ability to identify what his team needed from him and deliver in crucial moments of big games. Bush, who is ranked No. 24 overall and the 9th-best point guard in the class, is a player with an elite level of mental toughness and basketball IQ whose game should only get better at the next level.
Jason Hart II Jason Hart II 6'1" | PG St. Bernard | 2022 State CA-S , St. Bernard – Hart’s impact at St. Bernard became bigger and bigger as the Vikings made a run at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. We think the high IQ and crafty left-handed guard has his best basketball ahead of him and his all-around game was unlocked by coach Tony Bland. Hart is signed with Long Beach State and, if surrounded by the right pieces, he could be a game-managing type of player who helps the 49ers win games.
Isaiah Lewis Isaiah Lewis 6'2" | PG Taft | 2022 State CA-S , Taft – We were only able to get a quick glimpse at Lewis this season and based on that game, he’s a guy who could be a menace of a college point guard. The 6-foot-3 senior is a rangy athlete who has great speed and quickness with his first step and second level speed, making him a tough cover in transition and half-court settings when driving to the rim. Lewis also showed some catch-and-shoot ability from three-point range. Him being our 62nd overall prospect and 18th-ranked point guard it won’t be difficult for him to out-play that rankings.
