Continue ReadingEarlier in the month, we looked at the latest top 20 list of combo guards in the state. While those top 20 players should be on the boards of colleges, universities, and junior colleges around the south, there are some combo guards outside of that twenty who can play on the next level as well. In this PHLA article, we will look at guards outside of the top tier. Louisiana has a lot to offer at the guard position and these players accentuate that.
Justin Aaron Justin Aaron 6'1" | CG Natchitoches Central | 2022 State LA – One of the tougher defenders on a Natchitoches team that gets up and guards everyone. While he is more of a slasher on offense, Aaron can crash the boards with the best of them. He is a high energy player who gets the job done.
Trevontay Alford Trevontay Alford 6'3" | CG Sophie B. Wright | 2022 State LA – Alford is truly a three level scorer who does not mind banging in the paint. He has a better than average handle and can drive through tight spaces. Alford can drop jumpers on defenders from deep and his ability to get to the elbows and elevate for jumpers is next level stuff. He is definitely a tough cover.
Preston Bourda Preston Bourda 6'0" | CG Ellender | 2022 State LA – Bourda is one of the best perimeter defenders in the Boot. He can cause guards to expend plenty of energy with his baseline-to-baseline defense. On offense, he can light up teams from outside. When he is on from deep, he is pretty hard to stop. He is a prime example of a two-way player.
Jawarren Cade Jawarren Cade 6'2" | CG Many | 2022 State LA – Cade is a crafty scorer who might have the best lefty mid-range jumper I have seen in quite some time. His ability to drive left, step back, and elevate gives him the ultimate amount of space. He gives his team 100% on both ends as well.
Dalyn Davis Dalyn Davis 6'2" | CG Natchitoches Central | 2022 State LA – Davis may be a newcomer to the rankings but he has the potential to be in that top 20 list by the end of the season. He is a versatile defender and can defend all perimeter positions. His ability to get to the rim sets up his jumper which he makes regularly when uncontested. He is a player teams have to be aware of.
Desmond Duncan Desmond Duncan 6'4" | CG Winnfield | 2022 State LA – Duncan is one of the most athletic guards we have in Louisiana. He is very good in transition situations and he will either finish or get fouled the majority of the time. His baseline jumper is becoming a serious weapon which makes him even harder to defend.
Troy Dunn Troy Dunn 6'5" | CG East Ascension | 2022 State LA – The East Ascension guard may end up playing the wing or forward position on the next level. Dunn is a guard who can handle the ball well for his size and he can operate from the mid or low post. He is a player who can get his shot or make plays for others with his passing.
Christan Ford Christan Ford 6'4" | CG Captain Shreve | 2022 State LA – Ford was giving defenses the blues earlier in the season. He is quick, long, and can get to the rim with relative ease. Ford can also play off the ball and has gotten better at spotting up on the wing. He is a very good rebounder for a guard as well. For Shreve to have any title hopes, Ford needs to continue his growth as a player.
Dakota Gasca Dakota Gasca 5'9" | CG West Monroe | 2022 State LA – For two years, Gasca played off the ball and was known as one of the best shooters in the state. This season, he has taken on ballhandling duties and we have seen the depth of his game. Gasca can drive, pass, and shoot with the top guards in the state. His 40 point game aside, Dakota is a player who is worth a look for the next level.
Zaren James Zaren James 6'5" | CG University Lab | 2022 State LA – James is another player that may see himself more at the forward position on the next level. He has become a better ballhandler and perimeter shooter during his time at University. He is very good at rebounding and scoring in the paint as well. If a guard is defending him, that team is probably in major trouble.
The combo guards in Louisiana are so skilled. It is the deepest position in the state and the players considered as combo guards have a volume of talent to offer next level schools. I think these ten have a definite future with any school that recruits them.
