Continue ReadingThis week, I saw four high-level basketball matchups featuring some of the top talents in the state. On Monday night, I saw New Palestine go on the road and take down a good Guerin Catholic squad, 66-60. Then, on Tuesday, Brownsburg went on the road to Pike and showed why they are a true state championship contender. They would dominate the second half and cruised to a 73-57 victory. Friday night, Bloomington North came back from down 10 to take down Terre Haute North, 59-55, thanks to an 18-3 run in a five-minute stretch in the fourth quarter. Then, on Saturday, New Castle went on the road to Eastern Hancock for the first time ever, and this was the first meeting between these schools since 1980. New Castle’s size would prevail, and they would hold on for a fairly simple 63-50 victory. Now, let’s take a look at the top point guards from these four games.
Player Evaluations
Kamea Chandler Kamea Chandler 5'10" | PG Guerin Catholic | 2023 State IN (Guerin Catholic) – 5’10” 2023 PG
Chandler is a smaller guard who looked very impressive for Guerin on Monday. He came in with a career-high of 12 which he bested with his 18 point performance on 7-11 shooting. He is smooth around the rim and has a nice touch with both hands. He is also incredibly confident and shot it very well from deep. On defense, Chandler had active hands and feet and seemed to always be hustling. Great performance by the junior guard.
Ryan Conwell Ryan Conwell 6'2" | SG Pike | 2022 State #155 Nation IN (Pike) – 6’2” 2022 PG
Conwell is a big guard who seems to do it all on the basketball court. He is smooth and calm with the ball in his hands, and he can shoot it well from all over the floor. He also has an impressive step-back to create space. Conwell looks to run and gun, and he will have a lot of potential to excel at South Florida in the coming years.
Marco Fitch Marco Fitch 6'0" | PG Bloomington North | 2022 State IN (Bloomington North) – 6’0” 2022 PG
Fitch is a smaller point guard whose shooting ability makes him extremely tough to stop. He is lights out on the catch-and-shoot on the outside as he went 4-6 from deep on Friday night. He also uses his quickness to push the ball up the floor, and he has nice touch inside. Fitch had 18 points including 8 in the final quarter to push Bloomington North over the top and get the win.
Nick Klaiber

Bloomington North | 2022
State
IN
(Bloomington North) – 6’1” 2022 PG
Klaiber is a smaller guard who plays very fast and uses his quickness to make plays. However, there are times that the speed and quickness of his game can come back to haunt him. He seemed to be forcing for a lot of the game when he really just needed to let the game come to him. Klaiber has yet to receive an offer, but he should be playing Division 2 or 3 basketball next year.
Sam Maddy (New Castle) – 5’11” 2022 PG
Maddy is another guard who is not a scorer by heart, but he is a fundamental basketball player who runs the offense for the Trojans. He seemed to make the right pass every time, and when he was left open, he was able to knock down a three and finish around the rim. Maddy ended with 6 points and 5 assists in the win.
Blaine Nunnally Blaine Nunnally 5'10" | PG New Palestine | 2023 State IN (New Palestine) – 5’10” 2023 PG
Nunnally is a smaller guard who loves to stroke it from the outside. He is unselfish with the ball, and he is never going to take a bad shot, but he can shoot it very well from the outside. His vision and passing help him set up his teammates for good looks if the defense steps out of position. He will be a player that will have to step up big time next season for New Pal.
Devon Woods Devon Woods 5'10" | PG Pike | 2023 State IN (Pike) – 5’9” 2023 PG
Woods is a small, quick point guard, and his defense was excellent in this one. On the offensive end of the floor, Woods shot it well from the outside with a couple of triples, and he finished well around the rim. Look for Woods to be in control of the offense next year, and he should be a Division 3 prospect in the future.
