The 4th edition went off without a hitch over the weekend and lived up to its billing as one of the top in-season events in SoCal high school basketball. In this piece we take a look at some of the senior standouts from the event.
Logan Huston, Torrey Pines – Huston had the most impressive performance of the event as he scored an efficient 33 points in a win over Francis Parker. The point total set a new career high for the unsigned senior guard who also boasts a 4.17 grade point average. Huston got to the basket at-will throughout the game and used his length and body control to finish around the basket. The 6-foot-3 point guard plays with great pace, takes care of the basketball, and has a lethal pull-up jumper off the dribble.
Lucas Gordon, San Marcos – Gordon was one of the bigger surprises, for us at least, in this event. So much of the commentary around San Marcos centers around Devon Arlington Devon Arlington 6'3" | PG San Marcos | 2022 State CA-S and Max McCall Max McCall 6'3" | SF San Marcos | 2022 State CA-S (for good reason) but Gordon stepped up big in an important game where McCall battled foul trouble. The 6-foot-8 stretch four scored inside and out as he hit three 3-pointers and finished with a team high 22 points in a win over San Ysidro.
Martin Flores, San Ysidro – Flores scored a team-high 20 points in San Ysidro’s loss to San Marcos and had his impressive perimeter skill-set on display. At 6-feet-8, the wing has a smooth shooting stroke out to the 3-point line and can create shots for himself off the bounce at the mid-range level.
Mason Bowers, Carlsbad – Bowers came out of the gates firing in a first quarter that saw him hit two three-pointers and a driving basket for a quick eight points. He finished with 13 points in the win over Santa Fe Christian and, beyond his offensive impact, the 6-foot-2 guard is a great energy guy who does all of the little things to help his team win.
Otto Landrum Otto Landrum 6'8" | PF Torrey Pines | 2022 State CA-S , Torrey Pines – Landrum is considered one of – if not the best – overall players in the region. At 6-feet-8, the Boston University-bound center has the size, strength and skill-set down low that few other teams in the area can match-up against. Landrum finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to help pace Torrey Pines to a win over Francis Parker.
Toby Harris Toby Harris 5'9" | PG Carlsbad | 2022 State CA-S , Carlsbad – We loved the grit and toughness that Harris played with in Carlsbad’s big win over Santa Fe Christian. The 5-foot-10 point guard is as tough as they come, isn’t afraid to get up and pressure a ball handler, and looks to get out in transition and attack the rim. Harris is a good finisher around the basket despite his lack of size and it’s due to how aggressively he goes to the basket and the way he uses his strong frame to shield off potential shot blockers.
