Fremont of Oakland lost at Oakland Tech 70-45. Our second game Saturday a 1:00 tip-off was in Salinas where Everett Alvarez took care of St. Francis of Watsonville 79-30. Our other game Saturday at 6:30 took place at Archbishop Mitty a WCAL match up against the Bells of Bellarmine Prep. Mitty 56, Bells 39. Here’s our standouts for the week.
Julian Wilson 5’10 2022 PG of Fremont Oakland
It was our first look at Wilson a superb ball handler with speed, and craftiness to get by defenders in transition, and in half-court sets. The lefty can go either way to use his quickness to get into the paint. He drew defenders and dished out quite a few no look passes that resulted in assists and buckets. He used his floater, and pull-up jumper in the key. 18pts.
Josh Edgerly 5’10 2023 G of Fremont Oakland
Edgerly another fast moving guard was quite effective in the open court using his speed to race up court for buckets in transition, and from steals. He has the handles and quickness to get into the paint for jumpers, and floaters. He’s willing to challenge defenders in the paint on the drive. 18pts.
Ahmaree Muhammad 5’10 2023 G of Oakland Tech
Muhammad had a solid outing. He seems to have found a nice flow to his game. He’s a point guard, but has been working well off the ball. He’s aggressive on the wings looking to pull-up from 3., or attack. He’s showing patience, with good decisions. He used his strength, and handles to get inside often drawing fouls. He was the games leading scorer with 19pts, 5stls.
Mahlik Smith 6’0 2023 G of Oakland Tech.
Smith shows good patience as he works on the perimeter, and along the baseline. He has good handles and a solid body to absorb the contact when he takes defenders off the dribble. His mid-range jumper goes in, and he’s capable of playing both guard spots with his patience and passing. He’s a guard that can have some effect in the post as well. He had 12pts.
Omar Staples 6’4 2023 G/F of Oakland Tech
Staples has been steadily rising with his play this season. He’s a big guard with an improving skill set. He does well handling the ball in open court, using his body and good balance to get into the areas where he’s most effective. He can hit the elbow jumper. He’s strong working the baseline, and he’s effective in the post. He’ll rebound and defend.13pts
Jalen Brown Jalen Brown 6'2" | SG Modesto Christian | 2023 State CA-N 6’3 2023 G of Everett Alvarez.
Brown is an athletic player with a good frame and a long wingspan for 6’3. He has all the tools to be a productive player on the court against quality competition. He’s a good passer with the vision to see up court and cutters. He does well attacking the rim along the baseline. He can hit the corner 3. He has good bounce, and a quick 2nd jump for rebounds and put backs. We’ll see more of him in a more competitive environment.
Theoren Brouillette 6’3 2022 G/W of Bellarmine Prep
Brouillette is a versatile type of player who contributes in different areas for his team. He handles the ball with good vision and passing. He moves well without the ball using screens, and other ways to get a shot for himself. He can hit the open three if left unattended. He had three 3’s and 17pts.
Derek Sangster Derek Sangster 6'7" | SF Archbishop Mitty | 2023 State #213 Nation CA-N 6’7 2023 W/F of Archbishop Mitty
Sangster looks like he has embraced his role as a inside/out player on this team. He’s raised his level of play, and looks like he’s in the flow of the game. He’s doing some handling on the perimeter, rebounding, and leading in transition. He’s looking confident when he shoots from 3. He had four 3’s in this game. He was the games leading scorer with 25pts. His stock is going up.
