A few of these teams have been on pause for a week due to LAUSD protocols so for many of them this was their first games back since the holidays. I was able to attend the event and here’s a quick look at some of the standouts I saw.
1. David Mack – Fairfax 2024
Mack is a player I’ve seen a few times know and he always stands out for being such an efficient point guard for a young player. He attacks off the dribble and uses screens well to get downhill and put pressure on the defense. He’s quick; gets into the lane and can finish strong through traffic despite his size. Can dribble under pressure. Good drive and kick player. He plays good pressure defense and can force turnovers.
2. Sage Wayans – South Pasadena 2022
This was my first time seeing Wayans and he stood out for his versatility. He can play both forward positions and he was playing center in this game. He has good size and is able to get good post position. He can draw fouls and get to the free throw line. Good rebounder especially on the offensive end grabbing second shot opportunities. He’s fundamental, knows how to execute jump stops to score. Comfortable handling the ball in transition or in halfcourt sets.
3. Keyon Kensie Keyon Kensie 6'7" | SF Taft | 2023 State CA-S Jr. – Taft 2023
Kensie is another versatile wing capable of playing multiple positions. He also played a little center in the game I saw. He can stretch the floor and shoot from three-point range drawing opposing bigs out to the perimeter when he’s playing small-ball center. He’s very athletic and he moves very well without the ball. Makes strong cuts to the rim and can finish off lobs. He can also handle the ball and attack off the dribble. Defensively, he covers a lot of ground and can swoop in to challenge shots at the rim.
4. Jonathan Choyce – Westchester 2023
Choyce was the leading scorer for the Comets in the game I saw and he got a lot of his points moving without the ball. He’s a good shooter from three-point range, especially in the corners. Can get himself free and is good on catch and shoot plays. He also makes strong cuts to the rim off ball and is ready for the pass. He sprints out in transition ahead of the defense and can finish on the break. He never stops moving, he’s always in the right place at the right time.
