With some games being canceled/postponed due to the pandemic, we spent some time watching games livestream in addition to attending a couple. Here’s a look at the top players from the Classes of 2023, 2024, and 2025 we saw from four games – Central over Lebanon, Lake Oswego over Westview, South Medford over Clackamas, and West Linn over Sherwood.
Chase Nelson (2023 Central) – Nelson’s college future may very well be in football, but he’s certainly hard to handle on the basketball court especially on the 4A level. The 6-foot-5 post battled down in the paint all night long, getting tough buckets inside and grabbing boards on both ends. He may be more about brute force than skill but he’s certainly effective.
Matt Quinn (2024 Central) – On paper, Quinn’s scoring stats weren’t necessarily eye-popping – 7 points – but the fact he got three blocks in probably only 15 minutes played is meaningful. He’s long and lanky at 6-foot-6 and his length and timing on the defensive end – and the fact he’s left-handed – led to those rejections. For his points, he showed a soft touch around the hoop.
Amare Rolle Amare Rolle 6'4" | SF Westview | 2023 State OR (2023 Westview) – Rolle simply got things going from the outside against Lake Oswego and his sharp shooting three-pointers kept the Wildcats in the game most of the night. He was great on catch and shoot opportunities but also create a bit off the dribble and finished around the hoop. At 6-foot-4 with long arms, he used his length to effectively defend both inside and out.
Boden Howell Boden Howell 6'3" | CG South Medford | 2025 State #394 Nation ID (2025 South Medford) – It’s a joy to watch Howell play. He plays with a cool smoothness and his shot was silky smooth against Clackamas. He hit from deep off the catch-and-shoot but also canned a number of shots on the move. He’s a natural passer who plays unselfishly and doesn’t force the action. Lots to love with the lanky 6-foot-3 swingman.
Jackson Shelstad Jackson Shelstad 6'0" | PG West Linn | 2023 State #55 Nation OR (2023 West Linn) – To be brutally honest, Shelstad was very quiet in the first half. When he did touch the ball, after it left his hands he rarely got it back. But that changed quickly in the third when he used his unparalleled speed to get to the basket for finish after finish. Add in some threes and he wound up with a game-high 24 points on the night.
Mark Hamper Mark Hamper 6'3" | SF West Linn | 2023 State OR (2023 West Linn) – Hamper is clearly built like a football player and while he certainly uses his physicality to his advantage, he’s also very skilled with the basketball. The 6-foot-3 swingman was in attack mode against Sherwood getting to the hoop for finishes but also knocked down some open shots. A tremendous passer with court vision, he also tallied four assists.
Jared Sucher Jared Sucher 6'4" | SG Sherwood | 2023 State OR (2023 Sherwood) – The game against West Linn was only the third of the season for Sucher and he started off like a house on fire offensively. He hit deep threes but also drove into the lane and scored some well contested shots in traffic. While some shot selection was a little iffy in the second half, Sucher is a scorer and when he’s in rhythm, watch out.
