With the final tournament week in the books, we’re on the home stretch of the regular season. And we had plenty of big games across the state on Tuesday night and we’ll get you caught up on all of the action. In addition to some marquee match-ups, we also had an upset or two, along with plenty of individuals putting up monster numbers. We break it all down for you right here with Tuesday Night Headlines!
Booker T Washington 66, Broken Arrow 61
It was the most anticipated game on Tuesday night and it lived up to they hype in terms of big performances and strong basketball as Booker T Washington played host to Broken Arrow and the Hornets stung the Tigers with a 66-61 victory. 2022 star guard Aaron Potter Aaron Potter 6'2" | SG Owasso | 2022 State OK led the way for the Hornets with 17 points in the victory. It’s been a pretty good five days for the Hornets as they’ve beaten Union, Jenks and now Broken Arrow during the five-day stretch.
We talked early on in the season about how Booker T Washington has a big three with Potter, Kam Parker Kam Parker 6'2" | PG Booker T Washington | 2022 State OK and Ijai Johnson Ijai Johnson 6'1" | SG Booker T. Washington | 2022 State OK . We have to include Lathan Boone in that conversation as all four Booker T Washington guards are capable of leading this team to the state tournament. All four guards finished in double figures and did a good job containing Broken Arrow star Anthony Allen Anthony Allen 6'5" | SF Broken Arrow | 2022 State OK .
The Hornets absolutely exploded in the second and third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 45-29 to take a commanding lead into the final frame. While Broken Arrow would make a rally in the final period, it wouldn’t be enough as the Hornets prevailed and continue to look like the best team in Class 6A. However, stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the 6A playoff race later on in the week. Things could get very interesting in March.
Dale 56, Newcastle 54 (2OT)
Dale continues to show that they are one of the best small school teams in the state and Tuesday night was no exception. The Pirates could be due for a letdown after a massive 1 VS 2 victory over Cashion on Saturday night to win their tournament championship. And the Pirates would need some late game heroics to avoid having to go into triple overtime with 4A’s #10 Newcastle.
It’s been a busy week and a half for Dale’s 2024 standout Dayton Forsythe Dayton Forsythe 6'3" | PG Dale | 2024 State #206 Nation OK . He was ranked in the top ten of our initial 2024 prospect rankings at the start of last week. Then he helped the Pirates beat Cashion with a stellar performance on Saturday. Then on Tuesday, he tipped in the game-winning shot to give the Pirates a 56-54 win over Newcastle. With less than a second left, Dale only had time to lob a pass near the basket and Forsythe did the rest as he tipped in the game-winner.
With the win, the Pirates captured their 13th straight victory and improved to 17-1 on the season. They’ll have a few more tests down the stretch of the regular season, including a rematch with Cashion in their final game. But the Pirates appear primed for a run to the Big House in March.
Midwest City 55, Putnam City West 48
The Bombers are starting to get hot as we get close to the month of February, which is a scary thing for the rest of Class 5A. Midwest City has now won eight of their last nine games, including a tournament championship win over Edmond Memorial on Saturday night and their 55-48 win over Putnam City West on Tuesday night. The Bombers were 3-5 before this recent stretch began and it’s clear that they are starting to figure some things out with the playoffs right around the corner, which once again, is bad news for 5A hoops.
This game was close throughout until the Bombers pulled away to get the 7-point victory. The Bombers had three players finish in double figures but forward Keivon Hudson Keivon Hudson 6'6" | SF Midwest City | 2022 State OK led the way with a team-high 17 points in the win. Midwest City has their usual athleticism, but they also have size and now they’re playing with all the momentum they need for a run to state.
Owasso 58, Union 54
It’s never an easy night in the Frontier Valley Conference and Tuesday night was no different as Union traveled north to Owasso. The Rams pulled out a complete team performance to send the Redhawks home with a 58-54 defeat. The Rams would jump out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter but both teams would settle in and it would be a back and forth slugfest from there.
The Rams have been led all year by 2022 forward Caden Fry Caden Fry 6'7" | C Owasso | 2022 State OK but in the marquee match-up against Union, it was a balanced scoring performance from the Rams. Fry finished with 13 points but the Rams had two other players in double figures and EJ Lewis EJ Lewis 6'1" | PG Owasso | 2023 State OK also chipped in with 8 points. For Union, 2023 star Trent Pierce Trent Pierce 6'6" | SF Union | 2023 State #73 Nation OK , who was recently ranked in our Top 5 for 2023, led Union with a game-high 27 points and showed why he can be a dominating threat from start to finish. Unfortunately for Union, it wasn’t enough to get the big road win.
UPSET OF THE NIGHT
El Reno 45, Kingfisher 43
Freshman Devon Tre Davis is the hero in El Reno today after his offensive rebound and put back gave the Indians a huge 45-43 victory over Kingfisher, handing 4A’s top ranked team their first loss of the season. Kingfisher had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but El Reno would force a turnover with just under five seconds left to give the Indians a chance at the win or the game would go to overtime. After the first shot was no good, it was Davis right there at the right time to give El Reno the upset of the night.
Sam Duren has much more on the Tuesday night stunner, along with more of a spotlight on the individuals that stood out for both sides. You can check out that break down RIGHT HERE.
