Three Up
Stewartville (10-4). The Tigers lost Will Tschetter and let’s be honest, most thought that they would slip. Not slip to being a bad team but I don’t think 10-4 was expected. Will’s brother Henry – a sophomore – leads the team in scoring and assists. Fellow sophomore Teegan Malone has been a 6’2 sharpshooter scoring 11 a game and making 46.4 percent of his threes, and then 6’8 senior Miles Hettinger Miles Hettinger 6'8" | C Stewartville | 2022 State MN is averaging a solid 11 points and 6.5 boards a game.
Mankato East (8-4). The Cougars started slow losing to Red Wing and Winona slipping to 3-4. Since that point East beat rivals Mankato West and hammered four other opponents improving to 8-4. This weekend East plays Owatonna in a true test to see where things are for the team. East leader BJ Omot BJ Omot 6'8" | PF Mankato East | 2022 State #231 Nation MN is starting to play like the type of senior that needs to be talked about as a top ten Mr. basketball talent.
St. Cloud Tech (8-4). The Tigers are on a role winning five straight and 7 of their last 8 games. What’s even more impressive is that Tech has completely clobbered Fergus Falls (by 40), Willmar, Bemidji, Cathedral, and then two other 40 point area games (Apollo and Little Falls). Donald Ferguson Donald Ferguson 6'1" | SG St. Cloud Tech | 2022 State MN III is scoring 25 points a game leading the way.
Three Down
St. Francis (4-7). The Saints have lost six games in a row after starting the season winning four of five. What’s truly odd is that Matthew Bothun Matthew Bothun 6'9" | PF St. Francis | 2023 State MN returned and is averaging 30 points a game, but they haven’t won a game with him yet. And the schedule hasn’t become overly tough recently either. The team has the potential for more but North Branch, Becker, and Princeton are on the horizon.
Alexandria (9-3). The Cards hit a two game snag losing to Sartell and Hutch. Good teams of course and this team can and will likely bounce back. But then again these are the type of teams that Alex knows they need to beat if they want to return to the state title game. I have a feeling a long winning streak is ahead for this team.
Marshall (9-5). The Tigers are usually a contender for section and state, and maybe they are again this season. This week though they lost to Mankato West and SF Washington plus they have lost to SF Lincoln, Redwood Valley, and Hutchinson. These are some of the best teams on their schedule but Marshall has lost to them this year. The Redwood Valley rematch and a game with Mankato East is coming up so it will be interesting to see how the team does in those games.
