And you bet the mature 6-foot-2 point guard delivered. The sophomore stepped up and hit a NBA range three to propel the Roughriders to victory, just one of the many highlights so far this season for the state’s top-ranked player in the Class of 2024.
Incredibly, the three was Hill’s only made field goal of the night. Considering he and Roosevelt had been out of action due to pandemic and school closure-related issues since the Les Schwab Invitational, rust was to be expected. But while his shot wasn’t falling, he was taking it strong to the hole and drawing fouls (hitting 7-for-8 from the line), and dishing out three assists versus only one turnover. Hill is just ramping up from his performance at the LSI – the first-ever appearance in the event for not only him but the Roughriders as well.
“It was a fun experience for me and my teammates,” Hill said. “There were a lot of crowds and you knew every game was going to be a game. I feel like I proved myself well. I came out kind of slow but I picked it up toward the end and I played good.”
Hill’s performance was good enough to earn him all-tournament honors, as he not only led everyone in scoring (26.8 ppg) but also ranked among the leaders in assists (5.5 apg). Another couple of stats that jumped out was the fact that Hill led the LSI in free throws made per game (7.3) and attempted (9.3). No longer just a jump shooter, he’s made it an emphasis to get to the basket thanks to his workouts and experience playing on the EYBL circuit this summer.
“I worked on my body this summer to get stronger so I could get to the basket easier,” Hill said. “On the EYBL there’s a lot of competition so when I come back to Oregon, it’s way easier. I also did a lot of workouts, working on my strength and getting stronger. And getting consistent – I felt that towards the end of the season I started playing better but this year I wanted to do that the whole season.”
On the recruiting front, Hill picked up a couple of new scholarship offers from San Francisco and Portland State in the fall, adding to the one he already had from the University of Portland. He admits that he’s not paying “too much attention to that stuff” and his goal is still high-major Division I. But Hill did take the opportunity to make unofficial visits to Portland and Portland State, which gave him a great feel for what college life is like on the court.
“I really liked how you are on your own out there,” Hill said. “(Watching) practice, they go hard every time. So being prepared for college is something big that me and my coaches have talked about.”
There’s plenty of time for Hill and his recruitment with years left in high school career. For now, Hill describes the mentality for him and his team. “A lot of people say we’re the team to beat so I believe that,” Hill said. “But we’re always going to be the underdogs because nobody respects us, so we’re coming for everybody’s neck this year. We want to win PIL.”
Hill currently ranks as the #1 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 rankings.
