It started with revenge on Beaverton and ended with a grind-it-out victory over Tigard, but in the middle against Jesuit might have been the most memorable moment. The score was tied in overtime and with 2.3 seconds left, the shifty 6-foot, 160-pound senior took the in-bounds pass, took one dribble, and launched from mid-court, hitting a game-winner at the buzzer to propel the Mavericks to the program’s first-ever win at the home of the Crusaders.
“Man, that shot was insane,” Westlake said. “I don’t have too many words but I know a lot of emotion and adrenaline went through me when that went in, because that’s like a once in a lifetime shot. Celebrating with my teammates afterwards was just a great feeling. That dogpile and in the locker room – it was a great moment to spend with my guys.”

The shot was just part of a big week for Westlake individually. His 11 second-half points helped propel Mountainside to a double-digit win over Beaverton on Monday and then on Saturday, he posted a team-high 18 points. He’s been near unstoppable getting to the hoop creating for both himself and others and has shown why he’s considered one of the fastest players in the entire state.
“It’s nothing different than what’s been happening all season,” Westlake said. “With our team, our scoring split is pretty even throughout – you don’t know what game is going to be someone else’s night. I guess it’s just been my turn.”
Westlake continues to keep his college options open and admits that he’s largely been focused on the season and not on his recruitment. He hopes to start looking into it more soon but for now, there’s no question he and the Mavericks want to keep the momentum going.
“I’d say we’re on a pretty good roll right now,” Westlake said. “We had a stacked week with three really good teams so the focus has been to be locked in. We played well as a team throughout, came up with a couple of tough wins, and a shout out to my guys. Going into league play we’ve started out strong and we’ve just got to keep up this roll that we’ve got.”
Westlake currently ranks as the #37 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
