The strong 5-foot-10, 170-pound point guard knew what potential the Mavericks had and individually, he had his sights on making amends. He put in the work during the off-season to get himself ready and it’s been paying off. Cohen has been turning heads with his play and has been a huge part in helping Mountainside to some huge wins this past week, starting with a huge home victory over Beaverton.
“It feels so damn good because last year we lost to them twice and they were both bad,” Cohen said. “So we wanted to come back and get our revenge. I thought we played a really good game and our defensive stops played a big part in it. We’ve got more to come.”
Cohen set the tone early about the Beavers with a huge first quarter on the scoreboard. His ability to put points on the board in a hurry has been on display so far this year – his 38-point explosion against Lake Oswego set a school record and has been one of the highest scoring effort by any 6A player this year. Cohen worked hard in the off-season on building strength and fine tuning his game in all aspects and it’s certainly been noticeable this year.
“Most of the time I’ve been shooting good from three, so creating my shot off the dribble has been something I’ve been trying to work on,” Cohen said. “Getting my teammates involved too – I’ve been able to do that. And whether I’m guarding the best player or whoever I’m guarding, I want to do a good job with my defense.”
College coaches have caught on to Cohen’s exploits. He notes that he’s been talking with schools such as Bushnell, Pacific (Ore.), Puget Sound, and Portland CC and has enjoyed getting to know the coaches. While he’s honed in on this season, he knows that he also has the opportunity top play as an unsigned senior in the spring and even into the summer as he doesn’t turn 18 until July, but overall he’s keeping all options open.
“I’m still looking into it,” Cohen said. “I don’t know where I’m going yet but I know I’ll definitely be playing (in college).”
For now though, the season goes on for Mountainside who went on to big wins at Jesuit and then at home against Tigard. The Mavericks are firmly ranked in the 6A top ten and Cohen believes that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
“I’m having so much fun with all these guys,” Cohen said. “I really think we can do something special. I want to win league, I want to win state, I want to do everything and I think we can do it if we keep on playing as hard as we’ve been playing.”
Cohen currently ranks as the #19 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
