The hard-working 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward is used to the ride and while it’s long, he understands the importance of it. He and his North Medford teammates have already come up to the Rose City practically every week so far this season as the Black Tornado want to play the best. And to date, it’s been successful as North Medford is riding high with a 12-1 record and a #2 power ranking as they head into Southwest Conference league action.
After an opening weekend loss to Beaverton, the trips up to Portland have resulted in victories for Dyer and his teammates. They’ve knocked off Lake Oswego, won the Lakeridge Tournament with wins over Clackamas, Canby, and McDaniel, and recently beat Sherwood on their last visit up.
“We always want to beat these Portland teams because we want to make a statement,” Dyer said. “We’ve got big hopes this year. I’ve played with these guys since second grade, kindergarten for some of them. I care a lot about these guys so I want to win and do whatever I can do to help win games, whether it’s score, get rebounds, or play defense. I love my teammates and I want to win.”
Dyer has certainly done his share of the work. So far this year he’s averaging 13.9 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists – all career highs with the rebounds and assists currently leading the team. In general, he’s become more offensively focused and has been operating from the wing, where he’s been able to create for himself and others – all things focused on this off-season to prepare himself for this year.
“I definitely worked on getting to the bucket a lot more and my handle, and I tried to get more consistent on my shooting stroke,” Dyer said. “I had football for all of the fall, but no matter what I’ve been in the gym just trying to get better.”
As noted, Dyer spent the year playing football and it comes as no surprise college programs have taken interest in his abilities on the gridiron. He’s received offers from College of Idaho, Linfield, and Pacific and others have been in touch. While Dyer appreciates the love and is considering all possibilities, there’s no question that hoops has always had a special place in his heart.
“I’m still keeping my options open but I think I’m leaning toward basketball,” Dyer said. “I’ve got a full season ahead of me so I’m hoping to turn some heads this year. So I’m going to wait until I have to make a decision basically.”
An outstanding student, Dyer noted that D-III programs such as George Fox and Pacific and NWAC schools such as Portland CC and Mt Hood have been the ones most in contact. He’s hopeful things will continue to escalate in his recruitment as he and the Black Tornado hopefully make a run through conference play – and beyond.
“I think we can make a run to the state tournament,” Dyer said. “I think we can definitely be one of the top eight teams in the state and once you get into that Final Eight, anything is possible. We can compete with any of these Portland teams.”
Dyer currently ranks as the #16 player in PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
