But the versatile 6-foot-6, 210-pound forward is his own young man and has his own journey. Things may have started out a little slowly for Grady his freshman year but over holiday break at the Les Schwab Invitational, he stepped into the spotlight and shone.
“It was super fun and I feel like I’m really getting comfortable with the team now,” Grady said. “We’re starting to figure it out and put everything together as a whole team.”
Individually at the tournament, Grady simply got it done. Over four games, he averaged 24.5 points and got his points in a variety of ways, whether it was knocking down threes or driving to the hoop and using his mature body and strength to finish around the hoop. The “Schwab” was certainly a coming out party for him as prior to the tournament, Grady had done alright but nothing terribly spectacular during the year up to that point. What was the difference?
“I think it was more my mindset,” Grady said. “Playing all the regular games I wasn’t that locked in, but when I got to the LSI it was the big stage. I got locked in.”
Playing at the LSI gave Grady the opportunity to get on the radar of college coaches and there’s no question, even at this early stage, he’s going to be a Division I recruit. In fact, he’s already picked up a scholarship offer from the University of Portland and other schools are showing interest. Yes, it’s early but Grady does have some early ideas on what he’s looking for.
“I just want to find a place where I feel like I belong at,” Grady said. “But my dream school is Kentucky and I like Oregon a lot too.”
There will certainly be plenty of time when it comes to Grady’s college recruitment. For now, the adjustment to high school basketball continues. As the Lakers have gone into league play, he’s continued to lead them in scoring on most nights. “For myself, I want to keep on getting comfortable on the court,” Grady said. “I also want to become more of a leader for my teammates.”
The PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2025 rankings are still in the works but you can be assured that Grady will be ranked high when they are released.
