This year’s 5A POY race is shaping up as a contest of some of our top prospects in the rankings. Throughout the season PH will keep you updated with the different POY races. In this article, we take a look at the leading candidates for 5A POY.
Favorites:
Joshua Jefferson Joshua Jefferson 6'8" | PF Liberty | 2022 State #158 Nation NV 6’8 SF Liberty 2022 (#2PHN 2022) (featured image) – A man on a mission. Jefferson has transformed his body and game. Sometimes stats do lie and this is one case. Although only averaging 20ppg, Jefferson has saved his best games for top competition, including 27 and 15 against St Augustine, 32 and 10 against Rancho Christian, and his now-legendary 41 and 15 game in the Tark Championship game.
Darrion Williams Darrion Williams 6'6" | SF Bishop Gorman | 2022 State NV 6’5 SF Bishop Gorman 2022 (#3PHN 2022) – It would seem only fitting if Williams took home this award as well. The senior forward has spent the early part of the season, racking up honors and offers. He took home the Tark Classic and Torey Pines MVP award, picking up an offer from Montana along the way.
Richard Isaacs Jr. 6’2 PG Coronado 2022 (#1PHN 2022) – The Texas Tech Commit has put together a strong senior campaign. One of the top-scoring PGs on the West Coast, Issacs has the Cougars off to an undefeated start in league play.
Dark Horses:
David Nealy David Nealy 6'2" | SG Stranahan | 2026 #27 Nation FL 6’3 PG Bishop Gorman 2024 (#3PHN 2024) – Williams and Richardson could split the vote, however, the sophomore PG is worthy of consideration. Two-way stud with the ability to dominate both sides of the ball.
Long Shots:
Tylen Riley Tylen Riley 6'2" | CG Durango | 2023 State NV 6’2 CG Durango 2023 (#8PHN 2023) – The junior guard is having a breakout year, and has been rewarded with an offer from San Diego.
DJ Thomas DJ Thomas 6'2" | PG Liberty | 2024 #19 Nation NV 6’1 PG Liberty 2024 (#1PHN 2024) – I expect Liberty to be right there at the end. Thomas’ play will be a big part of why they do. One of the state’s most underrated defenders, Thomas is averaging 2 steals per game.
