The Vikings jumped out to a 6-0 lead barely over a minute into the game, and increased that margin to 14-5 midway through the first frame. Alas, Springville gained their composure and was able to come back and notch a key conference win, 57-54.
The Orioles shook off the poor start and found some momentum near the end of the first quarter, trimming the Ed-Co lead down to 17-13 after the first quarter, then won the second frame 18-9 to take a 31-26 lead into the locker rooms. They overcame poor shooting in the first half (9-25) by dominating the offensive glass and making 11 of 15 free throws in the first 16 minutes.
Springville opened the third quarter hot and was able to push their lead up to 10, 38-28, midway through the quarter before Ed-Co closed on a run of their own to get the Orioles lead down to four, 45-41, heading into the last quarter. The Vikings were able to trim the Springville lead down to one point on a few occasions in the waning minutes. Leading 55-54 with 17.4 seconds to play, the Orioles were able to break the Ed-Co press and get a layup from Dylan DeMean Dylan DeMean 6'3" | SF Springville | 2022 State IA , giving them a 57-54 lead with 8.3 left. The Orioles chose to foul on the ensuing possession, rather than allowing the Vikings to get a 3-point attempt off, and the Vikings missed both free throws with 1.8 seconds remaining to give us the final margin.
Springville improves to 12-2 overall and 6-2 in the Tri-Rivers West with the win. The Orioles were led by Rhenden Wagaman Rhenden Wagaman 6'3" | SG Springville | 2022 State IA , who had a game-high 21 points. Edgwood-Colesburg falls to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the league. The Vikings were led by Kiernan Hansel, who had 12 points off the bench. Korey Putz chipped in 10.

2022 Mason Ashline (Edgewood-Colesburg)
The Vikings’ leading scorer didn’t have a big scoring night, finishing with just 6 points, but he found other ways to impact the game, finishing with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. He sees the floor well and was able to routinely make plays for others operating out of the high post. A 6-3 forward who does almost all of his damage inside the paint, he’s undersized but plays bigger than he’s listed.
2022 Jack Wiskus (Edgewood-Colesburg)
Wiskus is a physically imposing 6-4 guard who can play both with and without the ball in his hands. His handle needs to tighten up a bit, but he’s a capable ball-handler and decision-maker when he’s playing with the ball, and he moves well off the ball, finding space in the defense. He’s the team’s most dangerous 3-point shooter, and while he had a rough shooting night in the loss, the form looks good and he gets good rotation on his shot.
2022 Kiernan Hansel (Edgewood-Colesburg)
Hansel, a 6-2 power forward, took over the game in the third quarter for the Vikings, scoring 11 of his 12 points in the frame. He has good hands and is a big, powerful forward who embraces contact and has no issues finishing through it. He attacks the offensive glass hard and has good touch around the bucket.
2022 Korey Putz (Edgewood-Colesburg)
A quick 5-10 guard, Putz was a menace on the defensive end of the floor, coming away with a few impressive steals on Menster and Wagaman, picking their pockets and taking it the other way for layups. He has quick hands and good feet on that end of the floor.
2022 Rhenden Wagaman Rhenden Wagaman 6'3" | SG Springville | 2022 State IA (Springville)
A talented 6-2/6-3 wing with plenty of length, Wagaman was huge in the Orioles win, notching a game-high 21 points on 6-12 shooting, including burying 4-6 from behind the arc, a few of them huge 3-pointers that stopped Ed-Co runs. He has a really smooth, clean release on his jumper and has the ability to shoot it at a high level both off the dribble and the catch (although each of his jumpers in this one were corner 3s off the catch). He uses his length effectively on the defensive end, getting into passing lanes and contesting shots, and he’s improved as a ball-handler and shot creator. His scoring prowess should get him plenty of looks from area Division III schools.
2022 Dylan DeMean Dylan DeMean 6'3" | SF Springville | 2022 State IA (Springville)
DeMean is a bouncy athlete with some length who finishes well around the rim and is a really strong presence on the glass. He had 12 points and 7 rebounds in the Orioles win, shooting 6-9 from the floor. He runs the floor well, has good hands, and is a good passer who sees the floor well.
2022 Luke Menster Luke Menster 5'10" | PG Springville | 2022 State IA (Springville)
Despite being the smallest player on the floor, Menster made a huge impact on the game with his tenacious attacking of the glass. He pulled down 8 rebounds in total, including 4 big offensive boards, and used his quickness and aggressiveness to get to the free-throw line a ton, attempting 10 free throws in the first half. The lefty had an off shooting night, uncharacteristically missing each of his mid-range attempts, but he didn’t let that discourage him, finding other ways to impact the game and get his points. He finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, showing excellent court vision and touch on his passes.
