These events often pit teams from various parts of the state against each other who would otherwise not ever face each other. Small schools against big schools, opponents criss-crossing the state for games.
These events give fans a chance to see players they might not otherwise see. Here are a handful of players worth watching this week:
Nahcs Wahwassuck Nahcs Wahwassuck 6'5" | CG Royal Valley | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-5 guard, 2022, Royal Valley (pictured):
Perhaps no story is more worth following than Wahwassuck’s return to the Panthers. The team is loaded, ranked number two in 3A, and now has one of the best players in the state back in the fold. Wahwassuck missed last semester due to transfer issues, but is back and will lead his team in the Royal Valley Panther Classic this week. How quickly he gels with his old mates will be fun to watch.
Easton Ewing Easton Ewing 6'6" | PF Independence | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-6 forward, 2023, Independence:
The big man guides 5-4 Independence into the always-interesting Burlington Tournament. Ewing is averaging 22.3 points and 13.1 boards per game this year.
Mason English Mason English 6'2" | SG Pittsburg | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2024, Pittsburg:
The question coming out of the summer was just how this guy’s game would translate to the high school style. So far so good. The sophomore enters the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament leading Pittsburg to a 7-1 record with his 21.3 points per game.
Aidan Shaw Aidan Shaw 6'7" | SF Blue Valley | 2022 State #40 Nation KS , 6-foot-7 forward, 2022, Blue Valley:
Central Kansans have a chance to see the Missouri commit this week at the McPherson tournament. This guy is special and well worth the trip out to see him play. He’s a high riser who is always good for a couple of highlight-reel plays. His 18.3 points per game doesn’t begin to tell the story of what he does on the floor.
Landon Boss Landon Boss 6'1" | SF Osage City | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 forward, 2023, Osage City:
Boss just keeps rolling along as one of the best scorers in the state. He enters the Flint Hills Shootout in Emporia with a 25.8 scoring average.
Ketraleus Aldridge Ketraleus Aldridge 6'4" | SF Highland Park | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-4 forward, 2023, Highland Park:
Aldridge will have the opportunity in the Topeka Invitational Tournament to demonstrate to a wider audience what those in the Capital City have been watching unfold. The junior’s immense talents are starting to be tapped for the second-ranked 5A Scots. The high riser is averaging 17.6 points and 10 rebounds a game, while also dishing out 4.6 assists.
