Over the course of 45 years, this game has featured many of the all time greats in the game of basketball. It’s a game full of prestige and an honor for each and every player nominated nationwide. Michigan has a long and storied tradition in the McDonald’s All American Game, so it was satisfying to see 5 players earn Midwest Nominations. Let’s look at the Michigan prep players that earned this nomination.
Mehki Ellison (2022, PG, Flint Carman-Ainsworth)
Ellison is enjoying an excellent senior season so far. He’s been terrific as a playmaker for his teammates when the ball is in his hands. Ellison is great at penetrating the lane, drawing the defense and finding open shooters. He’s proven to be an accurate passer when on the move. Ellison also has the ability to finish at the rim.
JaVaughn Hannah JaVaughn Hannah 6'4" | SG Orchard Lake St. Mary's | 2022 State #221 Nation MI (2022, SG, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s)
Hannah is an elite shot maker and scorer. He can flat out get buckets and can do it on his own as well as within the flow of the offense. Hannah might be the most explosive scorer in the state this year and is certainly a big shot maker. He will be headed to Western Michigan University next season.
Carmelo Harris Carmelo Harris 6'0" | CG Flint Beecher | 2022 State MI (2022, CG, Flint Beecher)
Harris has taken the reigns as the leader at Flint Beecher. This is no easy task, as it’s a program with a rich basketball history. Harris has continued a run of excellent perimeter players at the school. He sees the floor well and can feed the post as well as hit cutters going to the rim with an accurate pass.
Kareem Rozier Kareem Rozier 5'9" | PG Orchard Lake St. Mary's | 2022 State MI (2022, PG, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s)
Rozier is as tough as they come. He’s a polished floor general on the offensive end and a workhorse and a true defensive stopper on the perimeter. Defense travels, and I’m willing to bet that at the next level, his defense will earn him minutes. Mark my words, he’ll be a favorite for Duquesne students and fans.
Derrick Voltz Derrick Voltz 6'4" | CG Carrollton | 2022 State MI (2022, CG, Carrollton)
Voltz is one of the most exciting players in the state. He might be the best all around athlete in the state. Honestly, he reminds me of current University of Michigan wide receiver Andrel Anthony. Just like Anthony, Voltz has in the gym range on his jumper and can make athletic runs to the rim that most just simply can’t. He’s will be playing football at Saginaw Valley State University next year.
