Continue ReadingAfter a one year hiatus. The Gotta Get It Hoops Classic returned to Grand Blanc with its usual deep field. The amount of young talent is what initially jumped off the program as a watched in person. If this group of young players stays in the state we have a lot to look forward to. Upperclassmen standouts coming shortly.
Trey McKenney 6-4 2025 Orchard Lake St Mary’s Best prospect on the day might have been one of the the youngest. The top 10 nationally ranked guard backed up his billing and then some. Not surprising that the Flint native played with intensity and purpose from the jump. In his return home wanted to show that this was “his town”. Apparent in how he played and he said it demonstratively to the crowd after forcing an early Grand Blanc timeout. While some might like it. I loved the show of fire and competitiveness. Nothing about his game says freshman. Physically advanced with sturdy athletic frame. I would anticipate even more athleticism as he ages. But he has plenty at this point. Already a true three level scorer at such a young age. Started out the game red hot from behind arc and finished with five threes. In the second half moved into the mid range. I was impressed with a “dream shake” spin move that led to a text book fall away jumper. The icing on the cake was explosive dunk in transition. Finished with a game high 25 points. A truly special prospect in the 2025 class.
Chris McLavish 5-8 2025 Flint Carman Ainsworth The breakthrough performance of the day. McLavish scored 29 points and had the gym buzzing with his performance. Most of the damage came from behind the arc. But didn’t miss a beat when Curtis Williams Curtis Williams 6'5" | SF Brother Rice | 2023 State #93 Nation MI was switched onto him late in the contest. Showed off a high arching floater when he was ran off the line. Also showed the ability to drive and dish on a breakdown that brought fans out of their seats. On the recruiting front he is quite short. But don’t forget his is also very young and clearly not afraid of the moment. His father (same name) was a point guard with good size so a growth spurt could be coming. With or without it could be one of the top point guards in the 2025 class.
Keyonta Menifield Keyonta Menifield 5'8" | PG Flint Beecher | 2024 State MI 5-9 2025 Flint Beecher Speaking of small legacy Flint point guards. There are a lot of similarities between McLavish and this young point guard. Keyon’s little brother is looking to pick up where his older brother left off. The physical resemblance is uncanny. No intimidation at all going up against the deep championship backcourt of Grand Rapids Catholic Central. Makes up for lack of size with a very effective hesitation dibble that he uses to get space. Like McLavish has the prerequisite floater that helps score in the mid range. Came off the bench but it was telling that he was in at the clutch as Catholic started tightening it up. Not only was he in but wanted the ball in his hands late. Older brother had a late growth spurt that catapulted him to a PAC 12 commitment. The next point guard off the Beecher assembly line could be on a similar path.
Durral Brooks Durral Brooks 6'2" | PG Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2024 State MI 6-2 2024 Grand Rapids Catholic Central (pictured at top of article) While the defending Division 2 champ picked up its first loss of the season. Brooks continued to stake his claim as the top overall prospect in the 2024 class. He has many special attributes. But the one that is hard to quantify is how hard he plays. Scored four quick points to start the contest. Seemed to take this intensity to next level after standout Jack Karasinski Jack Karasinski 6'5" | SF Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2022 State MI went down with an injury. Seeks contact and finishes through it on his powerful drives. Not much slows down this motor. Including cramps which he played through in the second half. Not surprising that he picked up two offers (Oakland and Toledo) after the game.
Torrion Stevenson Jr 6-1 2025 Saginaw Stevenson was a bright spot in the Trojans loss to a very good Hamtramck squad. Unlike most of the other young point guards on this list. This prospect does not lack size. While he has good vertical size. Frame looks like it could easily add weight. Handled the heavy Hamtramck pressure well for the most part. Had a nice finish through contact on the break. Appears to have a smooth and easy left handed release from three. Not quite at the level of the other guys on this list. But has plenty of potential and time to get there.
