Continue ReadingThanks to the fantastic video quality of the YouTube streams that CISNtv puts out (and a few solid streams from schools), we were able to get caught up on several CIML teams during the holiday break. We checked out Ames, Ankeny, Centennial, Johnston, Lincoln, Marshalltown, Northwest, Roosevelt, Southeast Polk, Valley, and Waukee, and we’ll be posting some scouting reports on players from each of these teams over the next few weeks to help fill the basketball void. In this article, we’re taking a look at 2022 guards from the aforementioned teams.
Chris Louis Chris Louis 6'0" | SG Centennial | 2022 State IA (Centennial)
Louis is a quick 6-1 lead guard with excellent speed with the ball in his hands. He’s really good at changing directions while dribbling without losing any speed, and that helps him blow by defenders and get to the rim, where he displayed excellent body control and finishing ability with either hand. He played an efficient game in the Jaguars’ loss to Northwest, scoring 13 points on 6-9 shooting, in large part because of his ability to get to the bucket. Defensively, he has some potential with his lateral quickness and good hands.
Caden Kelling Caden Kelling 5'10" | SG Centennial | 2022 State IA (Centennial)
Kelling also scored 13 points in Centennial’s loss to Northwest, going 4-9 from the floor and dishing out a pair of assists. He gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly off the dribble, showing the ability to stop on a dime and elevate into his jumper. He has good court vision, making a nice cross-court pass to an open teammate for a corner 3, and he does a good job making clean, crisp passes to teammates. He’s a good athlete who can jump out of the gym, which helps him compete on the glass, and he has good footwork around the rim. Like Louis, Kelling has a load of potential on the defensive end, as his quickness and toughness really allow him to defend players all over the floor.
Cade Grevengoed Cade Grevengoed 6'1" | SG Valley | 2022 State IA (Valley)
A 6-0 lead guard, Grevengoed is a solid role player for the Tigers who understands his limitations and doesn’t try to do too much. He stuffed the stat sheet in their win over Waukee, finishing with 5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. He sees the floor well and keeps the ball moving on the offensive end, looking to get others involved, and he’s a good enough perimeter shooter that the defense needs to respect it. On the defensive end he does a great job fighting through screens and staying with his man, staying in his stance and moving well laterally.
Mason Morrow Mason Morrow 5'11" | CG Valley | 2022 State IA (Valley)
The quarterback on Valley’s football team, it should come as no surprise that Morrow looks to get others involved and makes good, crisp passes. He does a great job getting the ball into his teammate’s shooting pocket when he’s making his passes, and he sees the floor well. He’ll make the extra pass, and doesn’t look to force anything, protecting the ball well. He made a few big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter of their win over Waukee, showing a quick release and a smooth stroke.
Tamin Lipsey Tamin Lipsey 6'2" | PG Ames | 2022 State #163 Nation IA (Ames)
The future Iowa State lead guard was dominant in Ames’ win over Waukee, scoring 21 points on 10-16 shooting to go with 8 assists and 4 steals. An elite on-ball defender, Lipsey is blessed with fantastic lateral quickness and lightning-quick hands that he uses to make life extremely difficult on opposing ball-handlers. He might be the best on-ball defender we’ve seen in our time at PHIA. On the offensive end, he does a great job of using his speed to change the game. He can blow by defenders and get to the rim, where he’s an excellent finisher with either hand. He has fantastic court vision and is able to whip passes all over the floor without turning it over. He’s simply a dominant two-way high school player who will have an excellent career at Iowa State.
Trey Lewis Trey Lewis 5'10" | PG Johnston | 2022 State IA (Johnston)
Lewis has been putting up some remarkable numbers to start this season, and although he wasn’t at his most efficient in the game that we watched (Southeast Polk), he still stuffed the stat sheet in a major way, finishing with 25 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. A quick lead guard with picturesque form on his jumper and limitless range, defenders need to pick him up as soon as he crosses halfcourt because he has a green light and isn’t afraid to let it fly. Size has always been the question for Lewis, and while he is still a little short, he is filling out his frame and is competing at a ridiculously high level on the glass as a result. He’s a good athlete who doesn’t shy away from contact and isn’t afraid to stick his nose in against bigger players. He has a tight handle and can really shoot it both off the dribble and the catch, and has an excellent feel for the game. He’s a great passer with outstanding court vision, and he’s a creative passer as well, seeing the game ahead of others and putting his teammates in positions to score.
Armonniey Thomas Armonniey Thomas 6'2" | PG Marshalltown | 2022 State IA (Marshalltown)
Thomas had a rough shooting night in the Bobcats win over Roosevelt, finishing with just 7 points on 2-13 shooting, but he found other ways to impact the game, contributing 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a block. He’s small but very long, and he uses that length and his athleticism to impact the game on the defensive end. A solid ball-handler who uses his quickness to blow by defenders, he’ll need to continue to smoothen his jumper as he progresses to the next level, but he has a lot of talent and tools to continue to build upon.
Victor Hatungimana Victor Hatungimana 5'11" | SG Des Moines Lincoln | 2022 State IA (Lincoln)
A 5-11 off-ball guard who moves well and finds spots in the defense, Hatungimana is a quality perimeter shooter who buried 4-7 from behind the arc in the Railsplitters loss to Ankeny. He has a quick release and good form on his jumper, particularly when he’s shooting it off the catch. He has developed his ball-handling and ability to create his own shot as well.
