One of my favorite events of the year, the CHC is in remembrance of Chance Harmon, who at 8 years old passed away from a rare cancer and this event honors him while also raising money for child cancer research.
The event brings the whole town out as well as most of western VA, and is a really special day of basketball run by some very good people. There were tons of talented players and great basketball throughout the day, and it was another successful year to help “Give Others a Chance.”
Here’s a look at part two of the 2022 standouts from the event.
Tyler Nickel Tyler Nickel 6'8" | SF East Rockingham | 2022 State #85 Nation VA | 6’7” WF | East Rockingham
The top performer of the day was no surprise as Nickel had a huge game in East Rockingham’s thrilling overtime win over Floyd County, which was one of the most exciting games I have seen so far this year. The UNC commit had to do a little bit of everything for his team, scoring it from all over the floor, rebounding well on both ends of the floor and hitting a tough contested three-pointer to tie the game with under five seconds left to send it into overtime, where he took over in the extra period to give them the tough earned victory. He finished with 43 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Jayden Hicks | 6’6” PF | East Rockingham
Hicks stepped up big for East Rock as the secondary scorer and brought it on the defensive end and on the glass as well, and they wouldn’t have won the game without him. While he’s still raw, the 6’6” forward is an elite athlete who finished well at the rim, rebounded well on both ends and was an excellent screener and rebounder as well. He finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Dylan Bond | 5’11” WG | Floyd County
Being the host team, Floyd County not only makes sure they play a talented team every year, but they take pride in the game and Bond brought it for them in his final CHC game of his career. The Buffaloes play an inside-out style of play, and Bond took advantage as he knocked down shots from deep hitting 5 three-pointers and making big shots throughout the game, especially in the second half as they erased a 12 point deficit and went on a run to take the lead in the fourth quarter. He finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds in the close loss.
Ashton Agnew | 6’1” WF | Floyd County
Agnew is another senior that stepped up big for the Buffaloes, coming up with some big plays down the stretch for them and really bringing it in the second half. The forward showed good slashing ability off the bounce, he moved well off the ball and when his shot wasn’t falling from deep he attacked the rim and finished well in traffic. He finished with 14 points and 4 rebounds in the loss.
Ayrion Journiette | 6’0” CG | Northside
Journiette has been one of the best players for one of the best teams in Roanoke over the past few years, and he’s the lone senior on a young but talented Northside team that will be a tough out for anyone. While he can score it in a number of ways especially in the midrange and at the rim, he showed good leadership setting the tone on the defensive end, making plays for others and making winning plays on both ends. He finished with 11 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in the win.
Owen Dawyot | 6’3” WF | Cave Spring
Dawyot is one of the most underrated players in the Roanoke area, and he’s a steady and efficient wing who can impact the game in a number of ways. He’s strong and a skilled shot maker off the catch and off the bounce, he has good instincts on both ends of the floor and he always makes a positive impact for his team. He finished with a game high 13 points going 4-for-7 from the field, pitched in 3 rebounds and 3 steals and took a couple charges as well.
