Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Chris Gunn Chris Gunn 6'5" | SG Lawrence North | 2022 State #114 Nation IN – 6’5 2022 SG – Lawrence North: Well, he’s back! Indiana signee Gun returned last week after recovering from a broken tow in a road game vs Tindley and showed no signs of rust as he dropped a game high 34 pts and added 6 rbs and 3 stls. This Tuesday, he will have his first home game vs a struggling Crispus Attucks team. Expect another big game from this senior in front of his hime crowd.
Brandon Trilli Brandon Trilli 6'5" | SF Munster | 2023 State IN – 6’5 2023 SF – Munster: Trilli can make a case one of the best transfers we have seen come into the state as he had a big summer which has translated well into the high school season so far. He has had some high scoring games and is a big reason as to why Munster is 7-2 as of right now. Has a unique style of play as he has the body of a wing but plays more like a power forward. Whatever small school gets him, they will get a steal in a couple of years. He and the Mustangs play at Kankakee Valley on 1/7.
Trent Sisley Trent Sisley 6'8" | PF Heritage Hills | 2025 State #47 Nation IN – 6’7 2025 PF – Heritage Hills: Sisley is arguably the best freshman we have in the state of Indiana. Has incredible skill for his size and is already so advanced basketball wise for his young age so much so that he already has offers from both Indiana and Purdue. Heritage Hills has been struggling this season so far but have a good chance to get back on track as they travel to Gibson Southern (1/7) and Washington (1/8) this week. Keep an eye on Sisley not only this week, but for his remaining 4 years because this guy is special.
3 Teams
Westfield (4A): After being so, so close so many times, the Shamrocks finally got one of those big wins that they had been looking for as they not only beat possibly the best team in 3A Connersville, but then beat arguably the best team in 4A Cathedral all in the same day to win the Hall of Fame Classic. Their two stars, Braden Smith Braden Smith 6'2" | PG Woodlan | 2024 State IN and Cameron Haffner Cameron Haffner 6'3" | SG Westfield | 2022 State IN , are having outstanding years with Smith playing like a Mr. Basketball finalist and Haffner just picked up his first D1 offer from Eastern Illinois University after a 30 pts game over the weekend. This week, they have a chance to continue to build momentum as they have 3 huge games vs Mt. Veron (Fortville) on 1/4, at Yorktown on 1/7, and a huge rivalry game vs Carmel on 1/8.
Monroe Central (2A): It is now time to start to giving the respect that the Golden Bears deserve. 8-0 right now and have beaten teams like Northeastern, Daleville, Connersville, and Bloomington North and are currently ranked #5 in the 2A rankings. Overall, they have a well built team are being led by Taylor commit Jackson Ullom Jackson Ullom 5'11" | PG Monroe Central | 2022 State IN and Josiah Ullom Josiah Ullom 5'10" | PG Muncie Central | 2023 IN . This week, they will compete in the Randolph County Tournament and have a great chance to advance their undefeated streak. By the time Sectional comes up, Monroe Central is going to be the team that others don’t want to play.
Argos (1A): The Argos Dragons might be the most overlooked team in 1A right now. Ever since losing their first game to Breman, they have racked off 6 straight. They are being led by one of the more underrated wings in the state, 2023 SF J.J. Morris J.J. Morris 6'6" | SF Argos | 2023 State IN , who has been really dominant in most games this year. Their schedule does get a little harder the second half of the season and it starts off with this week with roads game at Trinity Greenlawn on 1/4 and at Bethany Christian on 1/7.
3 Matchups
Jasper (4A) at Evansville Reitz (4A) – Jan 4th, 7:00pm: Even though both of these teams aren’t hardly being talked about as one of the better 4A teams in the state, a win here by either or could start getting them in the conversation. Both of them as of right now have only lost one game with Jasper being on on a 5 game win streak and Evansville Reiz just received their first one in their last game. Jasper will come in and give the Panthers a fight, but I like Reitz get the win from big games from Isaac Higgs Isaac Higgs 6'2" | PG Evansville Reitz | 2023 State IN , Koston McReynolds Koston McReynolds 6'3" | SG Evansville Reitz | 2022 IN , and Gavin Schippert Gavin Schippert 6'6" | PF Evansville Reitz | 2022 State IN .
Bethesda Christian (1A) at Tipton (2A) – Jan 8th, 7:30pm: Bethesda Christian comes into the game 5-0 but will have a challenge going on the road vs a tough Tipton team. Tipton right now is 8-3 and have a well built team with Sam Ridgeway, Connor Hussong Connor Hussong 6'3" | SG Tipton | 2023 State IN , Nolan Swan Nolan Swan 5'10" | PG Tipton | 2024 State IN , and others. The thing that worries me with Bethesda Christian is that they have not faced a challenge like Tipton yet. For that reason, I am going with a Tipton victory but if the Patriots can find a way to get the road win here, they might be legit.
Brebeuf Jesuit (3A) at Zionsville (4A) – Jan 7th, 7:30pm: Is this the most anticipated game of the week? Yes! In this high-profile game you have arguably the best team in 3A vs the best team 4A. Zionsville is coming off a shocking loss to Mt. Vernon (Fortville) so a win here would help get them back on track. Billy Smith Billy Smith 6'7" | SF Brebeuf Jesuit | 2022 State IN and the Braves have won 6 straight but struggled with 4A teams at times this year. When it comes down to it. I think Zionsville has the advantage here and am expecting a big game from Logan Imes Logan Imes 6'4" | PG Zionsville | 2023 State #202 Nation IN . Zionsville gets the win here in a close one.
