Jim & Linda Booth, the good folks at Zip Zone Express, and Martin County School District facilitated a phenomenal event. A special thank you to Coach Jones and his Martin County Cardinals coaching staff for putting this event together! We’ve split our recap into five sections: Recap Pt. 1 & Recap Pt. 2, and Super Star Performers, Top Performers: Guards/Wings & Top Performers: Posts.
Lyon County – Sophomore – Travis Perry Travis Perry 6'2" | PG Lyon County | 2024 State #115 Nation KY – 6’2” Guard
Perry enters the season already as a 2,000+ point scorer in his career and holds offers from major Division I schools. Although he has a calm demeanor in the warm-up line, he turns into a scoring machine when the lights come on. Perry connected on multiple deep shots throughout the first half that gave him the driving lanes to showcase the full range of talent. The Lions’ style of “run-n-gun” offense gives Perry the green light anytime he is across half-court. He plays with confidence and determination that gives him a competitive advantage in every game. Perry is the top-rated player in the class of 2024 and his star power has given the Lions a tough upcoming schedule playing in the Marshall County Hoopfest December 3 and King of the Bluegrass December 17-21. Perry ended the game with 49 points and broke the Zip Zone Classic scoring record.
Ballard – Junior – Gabe Sisk Gabe Sisk 6'5" | SG Ballard | 2023 #232 Nation CA-N – 6’5” Guard
Sisk had a breakout summer playing with FOCUS Training Academy and shining at The MADE Hoops Midwest HSA. He enters his junior season as the #6 ranked prospect in the class of 2023 and is expected to be a leader for the preseason #1 team in Kentucky. Sisk was a tough matchup all game as he used his size to elevate over defenders for shots. Ballard did an outstanding job of giving Sisk room to operate at the top of the key where he routinely broke down his defender for a clean shot or setting up a teammate. He is a patient player that never took a shot out of rhythm. His low, long first step gives him the advantage to get by defenders and make plays. In a high-octane game full of top players, Sisk was clearly the best on the floor.
North Laurel – Junior – Reed Sheppard Reed Sheppard 6'3" | PG North Laurel | 2023 State #22 Nation KY – 6’3” Guard
Sheppard is arguably the most polarizing prospect in the state. And he is only a junior. If you followed Sheppard during his reign over the travel season with Midwest Basketball Club, you saw his stardom grow as a scorer. In Saturday’s game, Sheppard displayed a wide range of skills that truly dominated the game from every angle. His shot is effortless and pure throughout and he had a couple of breakaway dunks that wowed the crowd. But it was the little things that makes him a star. Sheppard found open teammates all over the court for easy shots. His hands are active in passing lanes, on press defense, and in rebounding opportunities. He ended up with a huge stat line achieving a triple-double in points, rebounds, and assists, plus notching a few steals and blocks.
Paintsville – Senior – Colby Fugate Colby Fugate 6'3" | SF Paintsville | 2022 State KY – 6’3” Wing
Fugate is a rangy wing that looks very comfortable at every spot on the court. After a strong travel season with Cave Gym Elite, he enters as a preseason contender for Player of the Region. He is a shot-maker that has the ability to get hot after seeing one go down and can go on mini-runs by himself. Throughout the game, Fugate showcased his skill to score at all three levels. He drives the ball with purpose and has the athletic shiftiness to finish at different angles of the rim. In a shootout with Lyon County’s Perry, Fugate was not intimidated by the momentum and matched shots. He finished the game with 31 points. Look for Fugate to lead the Tigers with his impressive scoring and playmaking acumen.
